You said that you heard from people and let me tell you what I know.
Obviously Eritrea has been colonized by Italy, even India and China also have been colonized. That doesn't mean that they have accepted it. But there were heroes like Dej. Bahita Hagos who have made great against colonialism, as I read from wiki. There is also a documented history of people Zeray Deres, Abraham Deboch, Moges Asgedom who are Eritreans against the Italian invasion.
As you want to hear from Gonderie, let me tell you some.
usually the Gonderies likes Eritreans because they are proud as what they themselves are. They even didn't have problem to make marriage with Eritreans and say 'kuratachew yibekagnal' = thier being proud is enough for me of course ' kurat erat new'. To add some the Eritreans didn't want what is not theirs and that why they didn't want to annex Welkait from Gonder while in every aspect the Welkaites ( north and north west of Gonder) have much more common characters with Eritreans but no single similarity with tigray. The only thing that the tigreans know welkait, humera, ... is when they come as a seasonal labourers while the natives and some Eritreans were the investors. When this labourers ( tigray ) feel mistreated by thier masters they come to Gonder city shout at the area called 'tigre mechohia' as an appeal for the governors.
