On April 4, 1987, Osman Saleh Sabbe passed away in Cairo, Egypt. He was born in Hirgigo in 1932. He managed to get the 1st group of freedom fighters, trained in China & Cuba. He joined the ELF in 1961, upon the invitation of Idris M. Adem (head of ELF)



After infighting in the ELF, he established the General Secretariat (Amana Ama) in Oct. 1969. On Feb 1972, delegates from the PLF1 & PLF2 & Sabbe’s (Amana Ama) held a meeting in Beirut & formed an alliance, ELF-PLF. Sabbe was to serve, as Head of Foreign Mission.



Sabbe played significant diplomatic roles, as head of Foreign Mission. In 1961, he was Vice-chairman of the Eritro-Somalia Friendship Association; established to promote the Eritrean cause all over the world. In Nov. 1961, on his request, the Somali Foreign Minister began issuing passports to Eritrean activists in Saudi Arabia after Ethiopia revoked their passports and later many Eritrean freedom fighters used Somali passports to travel.

In Mar 1976, he parted ways with ELF-PLF but retained the name ELF-PLF.

On Apr 6, 1988, despite an express Agreement with Donors to distribute aid in war zones, Mengistu H/maraim ordered all international relief agencies leave Eritrea citing ''personnel risks''; leaving many Eritreans who depended on aid because of the war to starve.

On Apr. 6, 1992 Eritrea published Nationality Proclamation N° 21/1992. The Law recognizes nationality by birth, naturalization, adoption & marriage. It also recognizes dual-nationality.

A person born to a father or mother of Eritrean origin in Eritrea or abroad, is an Eritrean by birth. A person who has "Eritrean origin", is any person who has a continuous residency in Eritrea since 1933. A person born in Eritrea of unknown parents is considered an Eritrean by birth, until proven otherwise.

A person may be an Eritrean by naturalization, if that person entered and resided in Eritrea between the beginning of 1934 and the end of 1951; provided that he has not committed anti-people acts during the liberation struggle of the Eritrean people.

A person who is not of Eritrean origin & has entered & resided in Eritrea in 1952 or after may apply for Eritrean nationality, provided he/she has entered Eritrea legally & has been domiciled in Eritrea for 10 years before 1974 or has been in Eritrea for 20 years while making periodic visits abroad.

On April 7, 1992 the then Provisional Government of Eritrea issued a Referendum Proclamation 22/1992, setting out rules and regulations to govern the referendum process and establishing a Referendum Commission and Referendum Court.

In its Preamble, the Proclamation states the people & the then Provisional Government of Eritrea freely decided to delay for 2 years the expression of the right to self-determination through an internationally-observed, free & fair referendum.

The Proclam provided,

Do you approve #Eritrea to become an independent sovereign state?

Yes [] No[]

There was no other question on the ballot. The ballot was printed in all Eritrean languages. Majority of the votes cast was required for the Referendum to receive approval.

On Apr 5, 2011, the late PM Meles Zenawi told lawmakers Ethiopia would work for a regime change in Eritrea, while presenting an 8 month gov. performance report. He also said;

In order to prevent any development on Blue Nile River, Egypt & Eritrea have created their own front.

We have embarked ourselves on equal reaction, which is regime change. This regime change is not by invading Eritrea but by supporting the Eritrean people and groups which want to dismantle the regime. We are fully engaged in doing so,

On Apr. 8, 1941, British, Indian, & Free French troops captured hill forts surrounding Massawa & occupied the city. The British installed Occupied Enemy Territory Administration (O.E.T.A), later changed into British Military Administration (BMA).

..the port of Massawa is in our hands. The Red Sea has been virtually cleared of enemy warships, which is a matter of considerable & even far reaching convenience...

Then, the first U.S warship entered Massawa.



During WWII, Massawa was the homeport for the Red Sea Flotilla of the Italian Royal Navy (Regia Marina). When the city fell, a large number of Italian and German ships were sunk in an attempt to block Allied Forces use of the harbor of Massawa.

Brigadier General Russell H. Maxwell, the head of the US Mission to North Africa, planned facilities for aircraft repair and assembly at Gura (Eritrea) reconditioning and repair shops for tanks and motor vehicles at Asmara and port and naval repair facilities at Massawa.
