Some Good News Smelling From Ethiopia

Post by DefendTheTruth » 02 Apr 2020, 16:12

As the worst ever pandemic in generations is still holding the world under its grip across all continents and the number of infected and confirmed clinically (and reported) reached the mark of one million today and holding the world in sorrow the case of Ethiopia might be one of a slight glimmer of hope that this devastating virus could be defeated if handled properly.

Ethiopia might have something to share with rest of the world, even when I understand that this is too early.

Until now Ethiopia has confirmed cases of 29 patients from which 3 has already recovered according to the John Hopkins University Corona Resource Center, without any fatality case so far.

I heard on the news today that Ethiopia tested about 65 or so people (suspected cases, i guess) and didn't find any single positive case and this is a great news.

Even those who are super powers and have a vast resources at their disposal couldn't achive this much control over this highly contagious virus.

God spare Ethiopia and the rest of the World.

Let the scenes we see today in Italy and Spain, two major economies of the European Union, never be repeated in any other place of this planet again.

It seems to me that the spread rate of this virus shoots up after a period of about 1 month or more since its first reported cases, looking at its graphical representation of many of the countries where the effect has been worst so far, like some European countries and the US.

This could also possibly be related to the fact that the needed tests were possibly not done early enough, not before the spread was not wide and then starting the tests massively at once. This could shoot up the graph of spread on the paper.

The other possibility could also be related to the nature of the virus itself. It is said that it is asymptomatic, which means that an infected person can transmit the virus without having shown the symptoms of the disease before that.

On top of that the incubation period of the virus is said to be about 14 days, which means there are people who can carry the virus around for about 14 days and then get healed again without being fallen victim of the virus or show the symptoms. During the 14 days period that person can infect others and the infected person can also in turn transmit for about 14 days without having shown symptoms of the disease. This chain can go further, at least theoretically.

At the same time the contact-sphere of the infected might get very wide in the mean time, after which it might overwhelm the authorities to cope with and get it under control.

Taking these points alone into consideration the next few weeks or a month could be very critical period in Ethiopia, where we are all worried that the country has no power to cope with and get it under control if the shoot up is yet to come, a possible national desaster, which I pray to Gode to forbid.

Until now we see that the spread is very much under control, the Ethiopian authorities are doing their best and the strategy they are following (containment) seems to work in their favor and that of the country at large.

I came back to this post to share my view that it is still not yet time to lose one's attention and should be a time of utmost preparedness for all kinds eventuality.

So far once it has arrived it has also instigated havoc even in many well to do nations of the world. We all need to be prepared to all kinds of possibilities.

The smell I was talking about is here already, now it is no more just a smell but a room full of odour.

With no lockdown, few ventilators and similarily scarce all other vital resources, Ethiopia beating Covid-19 so far and teaching the wisdom how to do so to the rest of the world.

Well, to be honest here, one thing must be said:

in comparison to many other countries where the effect of this pandemic were particularily advers in Ethiopia people didn't wait to die for COVID-19 to arrive, we were already dying since well before the arrival of COVID-19.

But at least here we were some how spared to some degree from experiencing the same scene we have been seeing in many countries around the world.

"Still, at a time when the world is trying to figure out which national responses have worked and which have failed, tentative judgments have to be made. For the moment at least, Ethiopia seems to be winning."

We could have also been burying thousands of people a day, like many others have been doing over a number of weeks and the biggest problem hereby would have been that we can't afford to implement "lockdown", which helped many around the world to mitigate the effect and helped lessen the tragedy.

BTW., is the article of the FT writen by a tigrean? It gives a lot of credit to your guys, Mr. Aqubay, Teodros and Meles, but no one else from the other ethnics in the country.

"The government has leaned heavily on a community-based health system built by Meles Zenawi, prime minister until his death in 2012, and his health minister, one Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, now director-general of the World Health Organization"

Dr. Tedros Adhanom 1: Diaspora inept politicians 0 here.
