Propagated pandemic/Epidemic- can herd immunity be possible with COVID-19

Viral illiness is so devastating due to many factors, most commonly because of its genetic make up and variability with its virulence behaviour, speedy mutation, environmental factors, etc, etc. COVID-19 is relatively new viral pandemic disease, though there were some reported cases in the past with respect to local epidemic feature in Middle East and China and hence its nature is not well documented until today. Vaccine/ Antiviral meds designed for this virus are not yet produced. Will Herd immunity be helping like that of Polio is my question- though that would also take time to be studied and scientifically proved.
