Long long long ago, Tigray was a small province/Awraja and has its own kingdom. Similarly there were separate kingdoms of Adwa kingdom, Enderta kingdom, Agame kingdom, Shire Kingdom and Aksum kingdom.

It is still a BIG mystery to me why all those kingdoms disappear and all become colony of Tigray. Do you have an idea?
