Chika Angol, King Yohannes departed from north Tigray for the last time to fight Mahdi but was assassinated by Menelik messengers from behind. King Yohannes never been surrounded by soldiers to keep his safety nor hidden in cave like Menelik, he was fighting like the rest of Tigrayans from north and south Tigray. When Menelik killed the king he sent a messenger to Italian in Somalia and told them the king is killed and Alula is not in north Tigray and asked him to move in to north Tigray and control the Sea for Menelik to make sure no guns come through the Sea from abroad to help Tigray. You said it right. First, Italy occupied and ruled Eritrea well before the death of Yohannes. Thus, Italy already established a strong hold in the plain sight of Yohannes. Besidies, the political complcations and mess created by Yohannes, nature was not in favor of Emperor Menelik in the year he fought at the battle of Adwa - both Tigray and Eritrea were in affected by chronic draught and famine. Emperor Menelik armies shared their own ration or food with the people, most of the horses engaged in the battle were taken from Wollo. How could a sane person blame King Menelik not take his army horse men through Tsorena, Badme and go fighting with Italy? Mother nature itself was fighting due to drought and famine. Besides, most of those in the North were Italy's spy and war aid. So, the only reason the TPLF's complain was just out of jealousy because they never been patriotic and stood for truth.
