The Tigray People's Liberation Front has long relied on Amhara and Oromo immigrant recruits to beef up the Tigray army, but in recent years the number of new recruits from those two ethnic groups has dwindled, mainly due to instability and unrest in Ethiopia following the illegal overthrow of the TPLF democratic government.
Last month, the TPLF government of Tigray made major policy changes to allow Amhara and Oromo soldiers become Tigray citizens through a naturalization process. President Debretsion also signed a bill into law to expedite the pathway to citizenship for such recruits during period of unrest and uncertainty.
An Amhara veteran who served in Badme war said he is looking forward to becoming naturalized Tigray citizen within months, and he thanked the TPLF leaders for their kindness and compassion in passing the long overdue laws that will allow Amhara immigrants become productive Tigray citizens.
"I have a great feeling and good perspective on the TPLF leaders," he said.
