Ethiopia reveals more info on petroleum test production
February 11, 2020

The Government of Ethiopia reveals additional information on the recent petroleum test production in the eastern part of the country, near Hilala gas discovery site in Somali Region Ogaden area.

Experts at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum of Ethiopia told reporters on Friday that the latest test production of about 1,650 barrels of crude oil aimed at identifying the potential application and volume of the petroleum reserve.

“The crude oil we produced as a test is discovered near Hilala gas field. It is part of the testing process about the amount and potential application of the reserve and the like. In other countries they simply burn it at this stage. But we produced it safely without burning and avoiding environmental pollution as well,” said Ketsela Tadesse (PhD), Petroleum Licence and Administration Director at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum of Ethiopia.

He noted that the test product is sold to companies, which were using imported coal and or furnace oil for road construction, for glass production. It is also stated that the crude oil production is tested by the same company, Poly-GCL of China, which is preparing to start production of gas in the same area after constructing a pipeline up to Djibouti Port.

The petroleum is sold produced and sold in domestic market during the first six months of Ethiopia’s current fiscal year started July 8, 2019.

“The construction of pipeline for the natural gas has not started so far. Meanwhile, most of the agreements related to the construction of the pipeline are completed. But still additional agreements are being negotiated, especially in relation to what kind of products should be produced from the gas, gas commercialization agreement, as well as how it will be marketed with local companies.

Construction of the pipeline will commence after such agreements are concluded,” Dr. Ketsela said, at a press conference the Ministry held on Friday.

He further noted that currently the Government of Ethiopia has engaged an international consultancy along with local experts in negotiation of Calub and Hilala natural gas commercialization with Poly-GCL. He noted that Government of Ethiopia plans to sell the gas in liquefied natural gas (LNG) form after refining it at Djibouti Port.

Out of the total oil revenue of the government 50 percent goes to the region the oil and petroleum is found, according to the the latest proclamation approved by the Lower House (House of Federation of Ethiopia). Out of which 10 percent will be directed to the specific locality the the oil is found.
The federal government will get the remaining 50 percent out of which 25 percent will be invested in parts of Ethiopia which are not endowed with the natural resource.

The sedimentary regions of Ethiopia cover a significant portion of the country and comprise five distinct sedimentary basins; namely: the Ogaden, Abay (the Blue Nile), Mekele, Gambela and Southern Rift Basins, according to the survey of Ethiopian Geological Survey, the state agency.

In addition to Poly-GCL, a British company named NewAge has been working to start test production after announcing discovery of petroleum in Ethiopia. Gas shows were observed in six wells in the upper parts of the Adigrat Sandstone at depth interval of 2442 meters to 3414 meters. In the gas-condensate fields of Calub and Hilala, with respective estimated reserves of 2.7 trillion cubic feet and 1.3 trillion cubic feet, the main reservoir unit is the Adigrat Sandstone.

Weren't you claiming Ethiopia was going to fall apart just a few days ago? My how quickly these predictions come and go..

Anyway SRS is going to get more than 50 percent of the oil revenue. The other 50 percent that goes back to the federal budget gets dispersed back to the regions and SRS will get a share of that so it's 50 percent of all oil revenue generated in their region plus that.

Without weyane to nibble at this money, that region and Ethiopia as a whole will now explode in development.

That's not fair, 75 percent of oil & gas revenues should go to the Somali region, 20 percent to the miserable federal government and 5 percent to Afar region.

Go check with any state in any other country if they get a better deal on resource sharing. Then maybe you'll have a better understanding on the idea of fairness.

I didn't say Ethiopia has a bright future ahead of it, I said Somali state has a bright future ahead of it, and who cares about other country? Somalis are not willing to share any of their oil and gas revenue with any other Ethiopian region, the total amount of the oil and gas revenues will go to the Somali state.

The federal government will get virtually nothing.

Oh you're one of those "Ethiopia will fall apart while my little corner will be a little piece of heaven".. in which case don't let me disturb your daydreams. I know how soothing they are compared to reality.

BTW I hear your leaders are in town being told how to behave. Big boy steps for them. Congratulations.

That's not fair at all! At least 50% of the oil revenue should go to Somalia, as it's the mother country and the righteous owner of the Somali Region.

I understand your pain. But bellyaching about Ethiopian territory while you can't manage to contain what's already yours is unhelpful. Go make more weird maps and color them blue. Maybe that will make you feel better.

You're lucky! Just be grateful to the Russians and Cubans! Had they not come to rescue your farting as.s, Ethiopia would be a giant province of Somalia by now, and you would be herding our camels! This is a gospel truth that you cannot dispute, unless you're a pric.k, which you're very likely to be anyway.

Somalia invaded Ogaden during Ethiopia’s civil war with the AID of USSR.

The farthest the Somali went was Harer then they were pushed back out of Ogaden when Ethiopians became more organized

Again the USSR and Cubans weren’t fighting along with Ethiopians just supplying our army to make the fight FAIR!

Adal 1500 came to invade Ethiopia with the help of arabs and Turks We had no one to help us but the Portuguese!

When Somali come to fight us Ethiopians they always come attack us when we are weak and they bring foreigners like they had cannons in 1500 from Turk and 15000 Arab soldeirs came to help them dirty cheaters

Here we go with this same old sad song. "If daddy Russia didn't stop helping me to go help you..."

If there was no moon, there wouldn't be any oceans either. But there they are. You can waste your life moaning about what could be instead of making it a little bit better for you and yours. Your choice.

Somali imposter.

According to the world's largest oil and gas exploration companies, Somalia has about 100 billion barrels of proven oil reserves along the Indian Ocean, Somalia has abundant natural resources, but first, Al shabab need to be eradicated.

opmerc.

You are high on something, Ethiopia will disintegrate in the near future, nothing can hold 84 different ethnic groups together, Get that through your stone head.

Remember, Eritrea is independent country.

I know you are an expert on disintegration. Not so much on ethnic unity. You know even less about Ethiopia and what holds it together. So were I you, I would lay off any predictions about the near or far future.

And I wish Eritrea was more independent. Independent people don't have to keep reminding others how independent they are. They just go be independent. Somalis seem better about this though. So maybe you can help them do likewise.

You are an empty vessel, Ethiopia is a miserable hell hole of an artificial country and one of the world's most impoverished country which will eventually disintegrate into many small independent countries,so your thoughts, beliefs, opinions and so on are irrelevant to million Ethiopian separatists, If you are Amhara then all you need to worry about are the Amhara people who eat, urinate, defecâte right where they sat during the day and lay nighttime.

Somali state will build a wall or a high voltage electric security fence to keep unwanted insects like you out.
