When I was in Addis a few years ago, I was shocked to see that all dilapidated Kebele and private houses in several districts across the inner city have been razed to ground. In the shadow of the AU building, there were so many shanty houses in Kazanchis but they have been all cleared and replaced with hotels, apartments & supermarkets. The entire Ire Bekentu neighborhood was gone. Standing in the high plateau around Gibbi or Niger Road, you could basically see someone dining in Harambe Hotel. There is still no visual barrier between Sheraton Hotel & General Winget St. in Arat Kilo other than the fences that Woyane thugs erected.

I am not here to question the legitimacy of the demolition or argue in favor of it. That is a whole new chapter and may require writing a book. I am here to declare that the clearing of Ire Bekentu is a blessing in disguise although some people haven’t yet recovered from the forced eviction. Even though Woyanes evicted the residents to subdivide this valuable urban land and lease to investors for construction purposes, they themselves got evicted before they realized their plan and retreated back to Dedebit. Here we have now Abiy determined to give back the district to the city residents.

All these towns should keep their history and why. Go see Western nations, they still preserved their history but remodeled it. Why do you go to tourism to Europe? Not to see the boring monotonous building but the historical buildings they preserved good or bad.
