On Tuesday night, an armed gang wearing government security uniforms opened fire on hundreds of worshipers at an Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the Hayahulet area of the capital.
The raid killed at least three and the death toll might rise. Following the horrific attack, the interim mayor of Addis Ababa, Takele Uma said the attack was sad and unexpected.
The interim mayor also said it was caused by a “rogue element within the government’s security apparatus” and the perpetrators will face justice.
As Oromos take the upper-hand Ethiopia’s political power, religious and ethnic extremists within the Oromo community are exploiting the opportunity to attack major religious institutions in the country.
Residents of the area where the attack happened suspect that the armed gang crossed the border from the neighboring Oromo region often associated with horrific ethnic and religious conflicts over the last two years.
