If what Ejersa wrote here — I have no reason to doubt it — is accurate, Jawar should be accountable for intimidating a public official. This is a guy who got his first degree from Stanford university , but unable to read and understand what was written about reclaiming Ethiopian citizenship. If what he posted is accurate, I argue, the law to begin with was written poorly. It does not specify to which governmental institution a person who reclaim Ethiopian citizenship should apply. Which government agency determines whether Jawar meets the requirements needed to reclaim his Ethiopian citizenship. Does he gave to Ethiopian authority a receipt that proves the US government granted his request to withdraw his American citizenship? That is important. The US government before accepting his “ change of heart,” I believe, should make sure the guy is not wanted by law enforcement officials for law breaking. There is a good reason one could change back to his citizenship of birth to run away from the law.
What Birtukan was saying is clear. She is not saying Jawar is not an Ethiopian. She has no way of knowing. What she was saying is prove to me that you are an Ethiopian because the law requires that you are before you participate in Ethiopian politics. Ayatollah give it to her the paper. When foreigners receive their citizenship here in the US, no one asks them to bring some approval letter from their native governments as far as I know. Ethiopia don't need to ask either.

Jawar has renounced his US citizenship and returned his passport at least verbally. My take is, he should be allowed to restore his birth right citizenship unless there exists a documented pending law suit from the US government. Even with that, he should be allowed to fight it as an Ethiopian. If he is found to have committed a crime, chances are, it shall end up being monetary judgement; I am sure his sympathizers will end up go-fund that.

In other words, Seyoum's type of wikileaks stuff means jack until IRS takes it up.

If the Ethiopian Government have issues with Jawar, take him to court otherwise just shut up. If they don't have a case against him or aren't willing to pursue it, well, then, let him do what he is doing now, run for office and oust the duds playing their own game.

Lol, another version of Merera. Dude, acquiring and renouncing a citizenship are not the same. You can't get a citizenship because you have asked for it. You must be made clean from any wrong doings or you are not pursuited by legal issues before you are accepted a citizen. Likewise, the Ethiopian government has reasons to ask he has got a clearance of abandoning his US citizenship before his request is considered. Otherwise, every foreign citizen of Ethiopian origin can flood the country to run for office because they look like Ethiopians and they can speak the language - idiotic reasoning of the century.

I agree with kibramlak. The issue is not Jawar could not reclaim his Ethiopian citizenship. Not at all. To reclaim his Ethiopian citizenship though he must relinquish his current citizenship, which is American. Why is it difficult for Jawar to hand over to the relevant Ethiopian authority a paper which states he is indeed without citizenship. Ethiopian citizenship should not be a refugee some ran into when they faced trouble with their “ chosen citizenship. By the way, Birtukan has nothing to do with Jawar citizenship. Dawi, it is not Birtukan, or us as you implied, who should prove Jawar's Ethiopian citizenship. It is him. Birtukan cannot make decision contingent upon what he said, but what he delivered as a proof. As for your implication the Ethiopian citizenship is for the taking whenever one chooses as a fallback , I disagree. People mostly adopt new citizenship for a personal advantage. When they relinquish the "chosen citizenship, " it is their responsibility to prove that they did. If Jawar renounced his American citizenship, as Revelations implied the other day, it is just a taxi ride from Bole to Shiromeda to get a paper that prove his claim from US embassy.

You are mostly wrong. Renouncing US citizenship is not a matter of unilateral declaration and just returning documents. You have to apply for it and have it be processed on the US side. This can take anywhere from days to a year. I have not heard of any news showing this process has completed for him.

Once he has managed to clear that process he still doesn't automatically become Ethiopian. He is at that point what is known as stateless. He has to then initiate a process to become Ethiopian. I am unaware of the length of this stage but I don't imagine it being any more expedient than the US version.

And if you're wondering the total amount required to complete all this is nowhere close to meeting the deadline for an election.

Birtukan left Ethiopia and run away from dictatorship who intimidated her for being an impartial balanced Judge. The US loved her and her value and gave her residence permit with welcome signature written in Gold color. In the US she did not aspire for a political office and the issue of being a US citizen didn't arise.

But Obbo Jawar came home with the kind invitation of a transitional democratizing new government and is currently said to be fighting life and death battles against an incipient democratic government and a democratic process, in which case he might easily find himself between the tree's hard inner trunk and the soft outer bark, where he might feel strongly hugged (which some times might feel as some what being mugged) with the squeezing power of nature to be expressed on his facial structure.

I agree with kibramlak. The issue is not Jawar could not reclaim his Ethiopian citizenship. Not at all. To reclaim his Ethiopian citizenship though he must relinquish his current citizenship, which is American. Why is it difficult for Jawar to hand over to the relevant Ethiopian authority a paper which states he is indeed without citizenship. Ethiopian citizenship should not be a refugee some ran into when they faced trouble with their “ chosen citizenship. By the way, Birtukan has nothing to do with Jawar citizenship. She had no right to grant or deny him. She is just saying show me the paper. Jawar at least one could think knows where to get it. Why bark on the wrong tree then?

He officially renounced his US citizenship, returned his US pass port. He should be able to provide that to Birtukan with that documentation. Done!

No need to act as a US immigration and naturalization service official here. It is their business to do the paper work is what I am saying. They/IRS can sue him if that is what they want to do.

In other words, if one is asking for the documentation of how he returned his pass port & renounced his citizenship, it is a fair question. Other than that his native citizenship is there to be assumed. He has full filled what Ethiopian written law demands for now unless Dr. Abiy does EPRDF on him as Meles did it to Seye, introduce a new law.

You seem to be mixing logic with politics. Jawar is in rush to get involved in the election process to eventually ensure his immunity against any prosecution. As open to public now, he apparently has issues in the US.

But let's forget that for now and focus on his Ethiopian citizenship claim. You said he returned his US passport and he is done. Let me ask you one thing: do you think every person who applied for citizenship can get a citizenship? Because, according to your logic, they are done too by filing their application along with the requested documentation. The fact of the matter is, they can be denied from getting a citizenship. Another simple example is applying for a visa. You can't get it because you applied for it (cause you are done with your application, according to your logic). Unfortunately, you can get rejected. Because, the process is not unilateral and certainly not your wishes that govern the process

So, jawar might have returned his passport but that doesnt mean he has abandoned his US citizenship. Until he has got a clearance, he is still a US citizenship. Hope your brain is capable of processing what I am telling you here. But if your drive is rather political, as Merera tried to argue stupidIy, you have every right to say so.

NEWS: OFC SAYS JAWAR MOHAMMED IS ETHIOPIAN AS ELECTORAL BOARD DEMANDS CITIZENSHIP PROOF FOR 2ND TIME

Addis Abeba, February 01/2020 – Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) executive member Tiruneh Gemta said Jawar Mohammed, who recently joined OFC, is an Ethiopian citizen. Tiruneh said this following a letter, the second of its type, sent to OFC by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) demanding the party to present proof of Jawar’s Ethiopian citizenship status.

Jawar Mohammed, who held a US citizenship, has renounced his US citizenship, according to Tiruneh. A letter written by Jawar to the Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs on January 22/2020 and received by an officer named Atikilti Abraha on the same day, requested the immigration office for re-admission of citizenship. In the two pages letter Jawar stated that he attached with the letter nine different supporting documents as required by the law. Among the documents listed, No. 4 stated that he has attached a copy of a letter from the US embassy in Addis Abeba written on January 06/2020 announcing that he has renounced his US citizenship. No. 5 of the same letter stated that a certificate of loss of his US nationality given to him by the US embassy in Addis Abeba on January 06/2020 was attached along with other documents.

Apart from those, the letter described having other supporting documents such as copy of his previous Ethiopian passport, documents corroborating his return to Ethiopia as of August 2018 and copy of an ID indicating that he was residing in Ethiopia, all of which are required by Ethiopian nationality proclamation for re-admission to Ethiopian nationality.



According to Proclamation No.378/2003 Ethiopian Nationality Proclamation, Article 22: Re-Admission to Ethiopian Nationality:
1. A person who was an Ethiopian national and who has acquired foreign nationality by law shall be readmitted to Ethiopian nationality if he:
a) Returns to domicile in Ethiopia;
b) Renounces his foreign nationality; and
c) Applies to the Authority or re-admission.

2. The provisions of Sub-Article (1) of this Article shall also apply to person who has lost his Ethiopian nationality pursuant to Article 20(2) of this Proclamation. i.e: “An Ethiopian who acquires another nationality by virtue of being born to a parent having a foreign nationality or by being born abroad…”

On the other hand, The Ethiopian Electoral and Political Parties Proclamation 1162/2019 Article 63/1 and 2: Political Party Formation, stated that 1. Every Ethiopian has the right to form a political party or be a member of a political party.

2. Any Ethiopian aged 18 or above has the right to be a member of a national or regional party in accordance with this Proclamation.

Article 69: Political Party Barred from Registration – 69/1/E states that
1- The political party shall not be registered if:

E. It has members with international nationality.

In an interview with VOA Amharic, Birtukan Mideksa, Chairwoman of NEBE, said the Board took these provisions as bases of its decision to write the letter. The Board also gave an ultimatum to OFC to prove Jawar’s citizenship status until February 07/2020.

“First, he has returned to his country. Second he has renounced his US citizenship. And third he has notified concerned authorities and requested a readmission of his Ethiopian citizenship. The law does not require him to do more than this. Jawar is an Ethiopian,” Tiruneh told BBC Amharic.

If Prosperity party/ OPDO was able to beat Jawar/OFC, his citizenships wouldn’t be a sticky issue.

If Jawar joined Prosperity party/ OPDO, it wouldn’t have been an issue for long.
