Complaints on VOA Tigrigna
Dear sirs,
This complaint refers to a segment aired on VOA Tigrigna, January 7, 2020.
The segment was a discussion hosted by VOA staff Tewolde Woldegebriel and two Eritrean diaspora: Yebyo Mesfin and Musse Sibhatu.
The agenda was the statement issued by the Emergency Session of TPLF(Tigray People Liberation Front) - the ruling party of Tigray, on January 5, 2020, which included a call to the people of Eritrea for sustainable peace.
Note that: I am not an official or a member of TPLF, I am wriiting this in an independent capacity as a concerned citizen.
Dear sirs,
I believe the 14 minutes segment on VOA Tigrigna violated multiple rules of VOA's journalistic codes, especially accuracy and balance, fairness and context.
1) The discussants repeatedly referred TPLF as "woyane", an informal name and often used by the ruling party of Eritrea and some adversaries of TPLF with negative connotation.
2) Both discussants, from the begining to the end of the program, repeatedly presented the Ethiopia-Eritrea war as a war between TPLF and Eritrea and painted all actions, including the UN embargo on Eritrea, as solely TPLF's act. No other actor was cited as part of the decisions.
(TPLF was a member of the coalition that ruled Ethiopia during the war, but not the only one. And all decisions were formalized by federal cabinet and parliament).
3) They claimed that TPLF refused to handover the disputes lands to Eritrea and demanded it to do so now. This is a pure speculation. The border is officially manned by federal military and the government of Ethiopia made no such official claims.
4) At one point, a discussant claimed that TPLF's consistent calls for peace are not genuine because what they talk behind doors is different. Again, rumor and speculation.
5) A phrase in TPLF's statement that mentioned that the people of Tigray and Eritrea as having a shared language and culture was made the central theme of the segment. The discussants insinuated with the journalists affirmation that the peace call was directed to only Tigrigna speaking section of Eritrea. This is inaccurate and out of context.
A) The phrase is common and often used by politicians and known personalities of Ethiopia and Eritrea to emphasize brotherhood.
B) Eritrea and Tigray share at least 3 languages. Therefore, the assumption of the journalist and the discussants was biased and speculative.
6) The segment claimed that TPLF says that the current relationship between Asmara and Addis Ababa is anti-Tigray. This is speculative and not supported by any official statements of TPLF and Tigray.
7) While the segment was supposed to inform and refelect on the call for peace, it was full of emotive phrases and events, short of constructive and forward looking opinions.
8 ) The journalist made no attempt to correct the discussants and to give context to the audience. In fact, he cited the phrase about shared language and culture as a confirmation of the claims made by them.
9) The discussants appeared to be reading from same script and would at best be characterized as loyal opposition of the ruling party in Asmara. There was no other guest, an Eritrean or Ethiopian, to balance the discussion. Nor was there any attempt to get the perspective of TPLF.
10) Last but not least, it is unbecomming of the VOA, also against US interests, to discourage peace overtures among the people of Tigray and Eritrea.
I urge you to review and recitify the matter.

The discussants used a name “Woyane” [instead of TPLF] with negative connotations ...
