This Day in Eritrea's History.

On Jan 1 1890, the Italian king announced the creation of the colony of Eritrea taking its name from ancient Greek name for the Red Sea, Erythreus, replacing the name Bahre Negash/Mdri Bahri. Massawa became its capital but was replaced by Asmara, in 1897.



Before consolidating the colony, Italian Società di Navigazione Rubattino Co purchased Assab on 15 Nov 1869. 05 Jul 1882, Assab was taken. Jan 1885, Beilul & Gubi were occupied. 06 Feb 1885, Massawa was taken. 09 Dec 1888, Italy declared Assab a Protectorate.

Italy colonized Eritrea until its defeat by the Allied powers, in 1941. In 2008, Italian PM Berlusconi apologized to Libya for damage during the colonial era & signed a USD 5 bil investment deal by way of compensation.

In 1997, Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro regretted the 1936 invasion & 5 year occupation of Ethiopia & described it as a "mistake'. Italy has never offered an apology to Eritrea & Eritreans, for colonialism.
