In his book, "Against All Odds: A Chronicle of the Eritrean Revolution", p 167, Connell confesses as much that he was CIA. They just don't let anyone access, to the inner sanctum at Langley. A senior EPLF cadre once told me, they knew Dan Connell's background from the get go.

His wife at the time (Gayle Smith) & he were dispatched to the Horn in the mid 1970s, with a mission. Her mission: infiltrating the TPLF; his the EPLF. She got very close to Meles, he, on the other hand, by his own admission, was shunned by PIA.
