Goals have got a number of functions, which are very important to be aware of before we consider about engaging in a given undertaking. The first thing you have to ask before considering taking part in an undertaking is to ask what the goal is, needless to say perhaps.
I tried to search in my courses of project management and found the following very important note to the functions of a goal (goals).
In the light of the upcoming election season in our country and in the face of hightend calls for political parties to get "united", it should be kept in mind that if that undertaking is worthy of consideration. Ask yourself, if you can identify yourself with the goal(s) of your engagement partner(s).
The following is a note I found in my notebook for project management:
In short if you are not united through your goals, then the best option you have to do is disband yourself from the undertaking (association) before it get too late.

The temptation could be high during such periods to engage oneself for the sake of political expediency and convenience of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" to lose the orientation.GOAL FUNCTIONS
1. ORIENTATIONAL FUNCTION:
Goals provide the orientation for thinking and handling by directing the attention of the team-members (the actors) towards the relatively time-stable directional points that not only immunize them against distractions, but also help them to stay on course despite occurring disturbances and difficulties. (It can also be added here that goals help to find a common identification of the actors).
2. MOTIVATIONAL FUNCTION:
Goals provide incentives which are associated with them that activate the willingness of the stakeholders to act and move them towards taking specific steps. The achievement of intermediate goals creates a sense of achievement, strengthens the team spirit in team work and motivates for the achievement of the next (better) goals.
3. DECISION-SUPPORT FUNCTION:
Clear and bindingly agreed up-on goal(s) support with making directional decisions in the undertakings at hand. They form a good basis for preparatory discussions. On the basis of the undertakings towards the goal(s), alternative solutions that affect the design of the undertaking can be better evaluated and (re-)selected.
4. COORDINATION FUNCTION:
Goals help to coordinate and synchronize the efforts of the different team members and other participants by helping to reduce the variety of individual options for action to a few, specific fixed points.
5. CONTROL FUNCTION:
Goals are important as a yardstick for the success or failure of the project (undertaking at hand). With the help of targets, not only the degree of target approximation or target achievement can be determined during and after completion of the action, but also the type and extent of the necessary corrective measures can be determined.
In short if you are not united through your goals, then the best option you have to do is disband yourself from the undertaking (association) before it get too late.
