From African freedom fighter to Sussex translator

Mebrak Ghebreweldi founded translation firm Vandu, 20 years ago

A WOMAN who spent 14 years fighting for freedom in Africa has now celebrated 20 years at the helm of a successful translation firm.

Lewes resident Mebrak Ghebreweldi fought in the Eritrean War of Independence against the Ethiopian government in the Eighties and Nineties.

During the near-30-year war, Ms Ghebreweldi was a field doctor and skilled Morse code operator during her nation’s fight for freedom.

It was in Eritrea that she learnt about the importance of communication.
Effective communication is a powerful tool that can change a nation’s fate and build a better world,
she said.

After the African nation won its independence in 1991, Ms Ghebreweldi moved to London the next year as a student to study business https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/business/ and computing.

Gaining a Master’s in business management in 1999, she then started her own language business as a single mother with two sons under five.

Twenty years later, she is now head of Vandu, a Lewes translation company with 1,500 linguists trained in more than 100 languages.

Her firm helps migrants and refugees become qualified interpreters, connecting minority communities across the country and giving them the skills to succeed in their new home.

It was Ms Ghebreweldi’s wartime experience that shaped this noble goal.
I learnt the consequence of breakdowns in communication, especially in a warzone,
she said.

Despite starting off 20 years ago as family-run Southeast Interpreting and Translations Services, Vandu has fought off multinational giants in the industry.

The firm’s secret has always been its emphasis on connecting communities, said Ms Ghebreweldi.
Helping people use their language and ethnicity as an advantage to get a better life, especially those displaced by war and conflict, kept us going,
she said.
We had no other fighting tool except being embedded in our communities.
Vandu has helped countless people train as doctors, nurses, and social workers.

Some have even set up their own businesses.
One interpreter went on to complete an MA in translation and now operates her own consultancy,
Ms Ghebreweldi said.
Another now runs their own Thai restaurant in Brighton.

With Britain becoming more diverse, Vandu’s services are in demand.

More than 60 languages are spoken throughout Sussex.

Arabic, Bengali, Farsi, Polish, and Mandarin are the most requested languages in the county.

Now Vandu plans to offer training programmes to help small business owners from minority backgrounds develop their companies.
We’ve never been about huge profits but social equality and justice through clear communication and understanding,
said Ms Ghebreweldi.
It is what we have done in the last 20 years. Vandu is a solid, reliable and consistent small business.
Helping not just the displaced but those who run businesses across cultures is what we will carry on doing.
Ms Ghebreweldi is also the founder of Diversity Resource International, a group training minority communities to start up businesses and gain skills.

Eritrea qualify for CECAFA Challenge Cup semifinal

http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-1 ... 634568.htm

KAMPALA, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Eritrea drew 0-0 with Somalia in their final Group A clash to finish second behind Uganda and qualify for the semifinals of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Kampala, Uganda.

This represents the first time Eritrea have qualified for the final four of the regional tournament. Eritrea beat Burundi 1-0 in their first group match before losing 2-0 to Uganda. However, coach Efrem Haile Alemseghed's team bounced back to beat Djibouti 3-0 in their next game.
I am happy that we are finally in the semifinals where we will play defending champions Kenya. If we beat Kenya then we are capable of winning the final,
he said.

The coach made it clear that after losing to Namibia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, they had decided to inject new blood into the team by incorporating many U-20 players.
I am glad that that majority of the players making it to the semifinal, including captain Robel Michael Tekle, are part of the U-20 team,
added the coach.

The semifinals will be played on December 17 when Uganda face Tanzania, while defending champions Kenya take on Eritrea.

Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), said he is happy with the level of competition.
The teams have proved that they have been working hard over the years and have improved. We are seeing Eritrea play good football and making it to the semis, and other teams like Djibouti and Somalia have also showed tremendous improvement,
added Musonye.

Uganda have won the regional tournament a record 14 times, while Kenya have won it 7 times.

BUSINESS WIRE

AFC Invests US$150 Million in the Eritean Colluli Potash Project

16 Dec 2019

https://www.afp.com/en/news/1312/afc-in ... 2160052961

LAGOS, Nigeria

Africa Finance Corporation ("AFC" or the “Corporation"), the leading infrastructure solutions provider in Africa, announces a US$150 million strategic investment in Danakali Limited (“Danakali” or the “Company”).

The funds will be used for the development and construction of the Colluli Potash Project (“Colluli” or the “Project”) located in the Danakali region of Eritrea. The Project is a late-stage, large, long-life and low-cost sulphate of potash (“SOP”) deposit, with estimated reserves of 1.254 Billion tonnes of potassium bearing salts. Colluli is planning to make a 52% potassium oxide product, which is a higher grade than most of its competitors’ products.

With a mine life of approximately 200 years, the Project will be of significant economic and financial benefit to the country, representing up to 10% of the country’s gross domestic product by 2021. The Project will place Eritrea as the only African producer of SOP, which is a premium-quality potash that improves crops’ absorbency of nutrients and resilience to adverse conditions.

Colluli Mining Share Company, the 100% owner of the Project, is controlled through a 50:50 joint venture agreement held by the Eritrean National Mining Corporation and STB Eritrea Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of ASX and LSE-listed Danakali (ASX: DNK, LSE: DNK). It has been agreed that Danakali will be the developer and operator of the project moving forward.

Samaila Zubairu, President & CEO of AFC, commented:
Eritrea is a post-conflict country that is in the process of rebuilding itself and its economy. Projects like Colluli create jobs, provide export earnings and tax revenues. AFC is keen to support such projects and the government’s efforts in achieving its aspirations of scaling up infrastructure investments to promote agriculture and industrialization for enhanced productivity and economic growth.
Mr. Yemane G. Meskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information added:
This is great news. AFC’s substantial investment will indeed be pivotal in the operations of the world-class Colluli Potash Project. It also constitutes a trailblazer for other investments in several prospective sectors in Eritrea in the new climate of peace and cooperation in the entire Horn of Africa region.
