When considering words you should always ask:
1. When is the oldest time the word came to be used in such and such language?
2. Which language used it first
3. What contact did the two languages have

Simple fact for you:

You can say Gurage has most Greek, Egyptian...but not Geez

Reason:

The Greek language has its roots in Phoenician alphabet, which uses implicit vowels in a way similar to spoken Amharic. The Phoenician in turn is derived from Egyptian hieroglyphs as you correctly said it. It is interesting though to note that Egypt, the mother of civilizations, uses today a borrowed language while Ethiopia continues to be the only country in Africa with its own alphabets.
