On Saturday, August 17th, we will be hosting a special event that focuses on mental health and wellness within the Ethiopian community. As evidenced by more and more tragic stories emerging about Ethiopians taking drastic measures to deal with depression, anxiety and other forms of mental illnesses, this is a conversation that is urgently needed within our community.
Unfortunately, mental illnesses ranging from mild depression to more severe maladies are treated as taboo within our community. Our aim is to lift the stigma off mental illness and spread awareness about this issue that impacts a large sector of Ethiopians and beyond. As with all things, lack of information is one of the root causes for suffering; this event provides a forum for Ethiopians who are suffering from mental illnesses or know someone who is to attend and get to know more about root causes and cures.
The event will be held at the Arlington Central Library starting at 2:30 PM and will be hosted by Bethlehem Bekele. A panel discussion that includes a broad range of mental health professionals, holistic medicine practitioners and spiritual wellness counselors will highlight the ways to address mental illnesses from a multidisciplinary approach.
