Giuseppe Sapeto (1838)

Giuseppe Sapeto (1811-24 August 1895), was a member of the Order of San Lazaro who traveled the shores of the Red Sea and was one of the proponents of Italian colonial expansionism.

Sapeto was born in 1811 in Carcare, Genoa.

In 1837, Giuseppe Sapeto settled in Adwa and wrote some works on Eritrea and Abyssinia. Between 1851 and 1855 he traveled, together with Father Giovanni Giacinto Stella, among the peoples of the Mensâe, the Bogos and the Hababs, following which he published an account of the places the pair journeyed to. Following this initial African adventure, he later taught the Arabic language in Paris, Florence and Genoa.

In 1862, Sapeto returned to Africa, and in November 1869 he bought the bay of Assab on behalf of Raffaele Rubattino's shipping company, which with the transfer to the Kingdom of Italy in 1882 would become the first Italian colonial possession, and was the stepping stone for Italian expansion into Eritrea.

As a representative of the Rubattino Company, he assisted in the first logistical phases of the Assab settlement, under the guidance of Captain De Amezaga, up until the appointment of Gustavo Branchi as Italian Commissioner of Assab. He left Assab in December 1880, never to return.

The city of Genoa, where he died, and Rome both have streets named after him in the San Martino district and a central square respectively.

Raffaele Rubattino (10 October 1810, Genoa – 2 November 1881) was an Italian entrepreneur and colonialist who started a shipping company that ran merchant ships on the routes to the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. He was also a founder of the Italian navy.

Raffaele Rubattino was born in Genoa the business family of Pietro (1785-1829) and Giovanna Gavino (1785-1831). He attended the Royal College until he lost his parents and sister Anna Amelia, in his twenties. He was then assisted by his uncles Giovan Battista Gavino and Lazzaro Rebizzo. He moved to Doria palace, where Rebizzo lived. He worked for Lombard Insurance company for a while and started a transport business in 1833 between Genoa and Milan and merged it with the businesses of Gavino and Lazzaro Rebizzo. In 1840, it became De Luchi, Rubattino & Company. In 1841 their steamship the Polluce sank near Elba after colliding with the Mongebella. He started a courier business between Genoa and Milan in 1842, along with Gavino. He also built larger ships: Cagliari, Piemonte, and Lombardo. The latter two carried Garibaldi and his men to Marsala, in 1860. During the Great Depression, his company formed an agreement in 1881 with the Sicilian shipping company of Vincenzo Florio to form the Navigazione Generale Italiana.

Rubattino, was politically active and used his business to advance many causes. He was a patriot and supported Nino Bixio in the unification of Italy. In 1869, Rubattino saw the value of the Suez canal and bought the Bay of Assab from a local ruler through Giuseppe Sapeto. Initially only meant to be a coal depot, this aided Italian colonialism in Eritrea and the establishment of Italian Eritrea by the sale of the land to the Italian state in 1882.

On November 2, 1881, Rubattino died at his villa in Albaro from a malarial fever. He is buried at Staglieno and a statue by Augusto Rivalta stands at Piazza Caricamento in Genoa.

ጁሴፔ ሳፔቶ ብወገን ዓሰብ ዝኣተወ ብኃይሊ ኣይነበረን ብፍቶት ኢዩ። ኣብቲ ስፍራ ዝነበሩ ሙስሊሚን ዓበይቲ ዓዲ ድማ ሓንጎፋይ ቢሎም ተቐቢሎሞ። ከም ኣገላልጻ መራሕቲ ወዬንቲ ነቱይ ወደብ "ኣግማል ጥራሕ ማይ ከይሰትዩሉ" ቢሎም ኣበራቢሮሞ ዬርብሓና ቢሎም ዝሓሰብዎ ንግዲ ኣስሪሖምሉ ማለት ኢዩ። እዡይ ኢዩ እቲ ሓቂ፡ እዡ ድማ ኢዩ እቲ ንጠንባር ቦተሊካዊ ዕላማ ብናይ ሕዪ ሚዛን ዘይምዘን ኣካል ታሪኽ ሃገርና።[4 ሚልየነ ነጥብታት]

The issue is not whether there was an entity called Eritrea then or whether the land was sold willingly, but whether a priest should involve himself in such matters.

I didn't invent the saying: "they gave us the Bible and taught us how to kneel down, while they took our land."

In apartheid South Africa, for instance, the church was teaching both whites and blacks that since blacks are the children of Ham they're cursed to be the slaves of whites.
