Horus, I think you may not understand the psychological underpinning of what it means to be an Eritrean. Or for that matter the historical facts that lead to Eritrean Federation with Ethiopia. I consider it the most egregious mistake Emperor Hailselass made. Ethiopia would have faired much better had it took the least of three choices that were made available to it; to have its own port and let Eritrea get its own independence. So what went on following that has been a disaster to both country and people. Eritrea has its own set of problems and the same with Ethiopia but the problems are quite different in nature and both would be much better to deal with it by themselves. Any country is tested at the time of difficulty, not at the time of tranquility. Ethiopia and Eritrea could be brotherly countries, less of confederation and federation, they can work out a trade and diplomatic even military agreement that would serve the interest of both countries, but these agreements can be improved or completely abandoned depending on how our relationship goes. I am for cooperation but not for any kind of confederation.Horus wrote: ↑30 Mar 2021, 21:16I am Horus, I hate to mince words. Here is my educated guess & prediction.
Abiy Ahmed and Isayas Afeworqi are jointly planning the 2030, the 2050 African leadership and development plan together.
I believe that Isayas doesn't want to die leaving Eritrea at the current level of poverty and underdevelopment. With Abiy's Horn Integration vision, Esu sees one last golden opportunity to create the Horn Singapore on the Red Sea. And, he can only do that with collaboration and resources of Ethiopia.
If such a scenario is accurate, that would mean a historic foresight on the part of Isayas because that is the most direct, simple and assured path to Eritrean development into a modern middle income society.
In fact it would be a mark of genius if Isayas is able to see the mere instrumentality of the political order and recognized that the purpose of the state is the happiness and prosperity of its people. Eritrea can confederate itself with Ethiopia and become an African Dubai. What is wrong with that?
If this is what Isayas is thinking, I would simply call it a genius in political thought. It is called problem solving !!! It is called creative political thinking !!!

TGAA,
Believe me I grew up on the Eritrean question! Poor Dina Mufti though! What he said is precisely what is on the minds of millions. Either ways, the two government or the two peoples will find their optimum solution when that time arrives.
As for now, Abiy and Isayas simple formed an alliance against a common enemy. Both wanted TPLF to go away and that is what they did.
But the people seized a totally different opportunity - the more or less coming together of the Ethiopian and Eritrean people! This is the truly underlying driver that is going to win now or in post Isayas Eritrea.
Ethiopia has a temporary sea port problem. I say temporary because we can't predict the possible developments between Ethiopia and Somalia going forward.
As the Chinese Sun Tzu said Eritreans must borrow Ethiopian gravitas to carry out their national purpose. In the course of this metaphorical marriage, Dina Mufti statement is mere family argument born of anxiety, doubt and uncertainty.

Horus is into something that is plausible and is likely to work but change is not easy. This may take time, however, this is not impossible.
They need time to iron out a lot of wrinkles in our minds because there are many people still stuck in the past. Any relationship, that is fair and just for both people should be pursued.

I am for alliance and people-to-people relationships. I am for mutually beneficial economical arrangment and also military cooperation. Those relationships should be hanker based on international relation laws. Those laws can be flexible enough to provide special treatment for citizens of both countries. Eritrea state's existence is based on its ant-Ethiopian colonialism war of independence not based anti-Italian colonization. There is an underlying suspicion on both sides of the fence which easily can be manipulated for different reasons. So we need to stick to good neighborliness, coupled with special status for both countries' people. That can be a building block for a better tomorrow. But let's keep it only at that level.

I had the opportunity to meet Prof. Mesfin Araya . He was an intellectual giant. His commitment to the Ethiopian and Eritrean people was exemplary. I can't say it better than you put "Any relationship, that is fair and just for both people should be pursued" caution should guide us every step we decided to take, cause any misstape could take us back to square one. That is the last thing we afford to do to great people of both countries. Peace.Roha wrote: ↑02 Apr 2021, 01:02Horus is into something that is plausible and is likely to work but change is not easy. THE PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE ALONE ARE THE MAKERS OF HISTORY ! It is not the calculus of the elite that would eventually bend the affairs of men; it is the desire of the people that will impose its force on the elite to bend!
