There have been times when I thought that if Ethiopia had to have another name, some version of Saba might be a candidate for a replacement.
Federalism has been suggested often to solve local governance problems locally and national problems in unity.
Can you entertain the following preliminary or brainstorming idea of how you can solve the language problem that you evidently view as a paradox?
Figuratively speaking and starting from western Ethiopia, let Obang Metho govern Gambella State. He can speak his native language, Amharic, and English. Let Abba Jifar govern Jimma State. Let Dejazmach Jote Tullu, Dr. Negasso Gidada, Obbo Lencho Leta govern Qellam State. If they choose, they can use Afan Borana and Afan Agnuwak locally. Let Nigus Benishangul govern Asosa State. Let Dejazmach Kumsa Moroda, Minister Yilma Dheresa(?), Obbo Galasa Dilbo govern Leqa State. If they choose, they can use Afan Borana and Afan Gumuz locally. Let Abishe Garba, Obbo Dawud Ibsa govern Horo State. They can use Afan Borana and Afan Gojjam if they choose. Let Fitawrari Habte Ghiorghis Dinagde, Laureate Tsegaye Ghebremedhin, Professor Merera Gudina govern Ambo State. Let Ras Gobana Dacce, Ras Abebe Aregai, General Tadesse Biruu govern Salale State. I can go on to the land of Nigus Teklahaimanot, Dejazmach Beley Zeleke, and Haddis Alemayehu. And to that of Atse Tewodros, Atse Yohannes, Nigus Mikael, Ras Iyasu. Somehow, I don't feel Meles Zenawi and Hayelom Araya belong to the same federal States. Atse Hailesellassie, if Hararghe claims ownership to where he was born, Professor Mohammed Hassan, the honorary Dr. Ali Birra, can govern two or so Hararghe States. I can go to the south to a Gada State in Borana and Nigus Tona of Welayita. Lenjiso Diga and Nadhi Gammada can govern Arsi State and Waqo Gutu can govern Bale State. Sultan Ali Mirah can govern Afar State as one of the anchor states. There are more places in and for Ethiopia.
When every Ethiopian who is capable to learn two or more languages become bilingual, there can not be a breakdown of communications throughout the country. Isn't the paradox you evidently see that simple?
In a brainstorming, no idea is a bad idea. I only want you to think thoroughly though this brainstorming and answer for yourself if your question above is a genuine one or a mere scribble. You can talk to all of these leaders, speaking figuratively, and see to it that their political demands in their own country Ethiopia is satisfied or if they have a better alternative in order to govern Ethiopia in unity.
