Potential wise, up till now we were virtually making nothing in mining, nothing through natural gas or oil and next to nothing through our exports. Almost all of our growth till now was due to massive government spending on large infrastructure. This was unsustainable long term because 1) it's built on a model of incredibly bad financing with super high interest and very short maturation periods (we were being asked to start paying the loans before the projects were even finished) 2) there was no concept of project management so there were multiple delays and budget overruns 3) with all the embezzling being done on top of this already weak foundation, we were going to end up with a sea of half-finished projects that all needed to be paid out. Meanwhile Weyane were partying every night in Addis nightclubs like there was no tomorrow.

So the answer on the IMF loans is simple, if we manage to fix the above three issues we would have an economy capable of paying 10 times what they just approved in loans. Once IMF and the other institutions saw that and realized competent managers are now in charge, they felt comfortable raising the loan ceiling up 700%.

Ofcourse mr world economist over here doesn't know any of this instead he wants to take credit for telescopes and satellites he had no hand in building and list the virtues of stealing money borrowed in the name of Ethiopia and stashing them in overseas private accounts while his own people don't have enough drinking water.

Speaking on Ermias Amelga on this thread is also going way off topic but I don't see what the kerfuffle is about. As I understand it, he is charged with conspiring to price-fix a property sale. Obviously the current market value of the property is not relevant to that case because he is being charged with what he cost the government at that time. The amount he's charged with defrauding the government would have also grown due to inflation or by being invested.

I don't see any reason for anyone interested in investing to be alarmed by such charges. In fact, knowing the government is willing to prosecute anyone to ensure an even playing field would give me comfort that the chances of my success are not dependent on bribing or colluding with government officials. That allows me to focus on just the fundamentals of any investment. And if he's found innocent of the charges, all the more comforting to know a justice system is functioning as it should.

Yes there is value in Ethio Telecom, Ethiopian, EEP and even the sugar factories. But the value that remains has been greatly depressed as a result of the criminal mismanagement and daylight robbery of weyane. I'm not going to justify someone telling me I should be grateful he robbed my house because he left some items around and I'm not back down to zero.

As far as management is concerned, both the economy and the government structure are not comparable to anything Meles did. Although some aspects of DS will persist. The critical difference though is the Meles crowd was indifferent to long term impacts and was only interested in what it could get short term. That's how we end up with commercial loans financing public projects and bloated money sinkholes like METEC.

To my knowledge, there are some projects that this administration will be directly overseeing because of the marketable value of the project to the country's image (La Gare development, Sheger Beautification, Ali Baba ICT development etc) the rest will be minister-level monitoring and evaluated in a milestone basis. The critical thing with any project though is preparation. Understanding as much as you can what you need for a project to be finished on time and on budget before you start and sticking to it the whole way. By measuring the completed things so far, it looks like they are maintaining that discipline.

Like I mentioned I would rather not continue this topic on this thread but it doesn't matter whether he is a petty thief or a white collar criminal. The law should apply universally. The reason someone gets detained is not just when they are accused of something violent. Someone being a flight risk for example, like he is, is also grounds to be detained. "He's not going anywhere, honest!!" is often not an adequate legal defense. His wealth also allows him adequate legal representation while detained so all his rights and due process are maintained. Beyond that, he shouldn't expect any special treatment or sympathy no matter what his other attributes are. If he's innocent, he can seek financial redress afterwards from the government and then continue where he left off.


The actual robbery is also still being accounted for but by most accounts the total amount that left the country is as high as 30 billion dollars not adjusted for inflation. That's 2/3 of our entire gross debt. That's money pissed away in crates of whiskey or currently sitting in some foreign bank account earning some bank manager shareholder value while poor Ethiopians have to pay it over the course of multiple years with interest. That to me is like being stabbed twice.

If you want to be specific by industries, METEC just got done disclosing that they are in the hole for 2.5 billion dollars. Ethio Telecom and EEP have yet to be audited but given the shape of their current services, I expect some jaw dropping numbers to come from there too. We all know the state of the sugar factories and the billions burned there. Ethiopian Airlines is the only one that seems to have escaped this miserable situation. So yes, considering the potential for all this money to contribute to the earning potential of the country yearly but instead is sitting as liability, I am comfortable with my characterization.

I don't know what you mean by "get 10 billion dollars from world market". If you mean sell one or more of these companies to generate that cash, yes that's possible. But what makes you think that's a good idea on its own? The WB/IMF loan conditions are very workable and we get to keep our earning potential by keeping control of these companies. Some might still get partially sold anyway for more revenue as they are being prepped to right now.

There is no immunity. Unlike you, Interpol and the rest of the world knows how banks and transactions work. We won't have to chase very long. Personally speaking, I'd rather watch all that money burn to ash than see any of you get off.
