First, every person and regime in power want to protect and perpetuate power. So ask this: what is the best way Abiye can keep power and continue to have it? If the balance of Oromo political dynamics tilts against the above maxim, Abiye will go with Oromo nationalism not Ethiopianism. This is rule 1.

We more or less know what Abiye want to do. He want to be a significant or a great Ethiopian modern day leader in the class of Menelik and Haile Selassie. But that is what he wants, not necessarily what the Ethiopian current environment allows to happen. In that case, there is a proven scientific behavioral principle: if a person/ group cannot do what he wants to do, then he will do what he can. Thus you must ask: what can Abiye do if he can't do what he wants to do? He can always become an Oromo nationalist, if he can't become an Ethiopian nationalist ! Yes and no - I agree, politicians in general value power over other objectives and want to extend their life in office by all means because more than anything, politics is a livelihood for many of them.

However, that’s not always the case. Letting a madman engulf the country in chaos to bolster their re-election chances isn't like stealing a loaf of bread to feed to their children and lineages. It would be a suicidal choice for Abiy to succumb to a terrorist’s demands. Having put all his eggs in one basket to reinvigorate Ethiopianism through his writings, speeches, hands-on actions and international relations, I don’t think Abiy will yield to a lunatic “activist” to appease his million or so gullible, uneducated and extremist young supporters.
