Crimean Bridge can be seriously damaged, but not fully destroyed — expert
EXCLUSIVE
04.06.2025 17:00

The Crimean Bridge can sustain serious damage from a powerful explosion, but completely collapsing it would be extremely difficult.
Structural engineer Dmytro Makohon said this in a comment to Ukrinform.

"In principle, significant damage can be inflicted with sufficient explosive power. But for the bridge to actually collapse — that's very, very hard to achieve," Makohon said.

He noted that during the truck bombing on the bridge in October 2022, about 21 tonnes of explosives were used. For an underwater blast, however, a smaller amount of explosives can have a greater effect. "An explosion on the bridge is exposed — the energy mostly goes upward. Underwater, the blast energy behaves differently. Water prevents the shockwave from dispersing, so more of the force is directed at the structure," Makohon explained.

He acknowledged that externally destroying a bridge support is very challenging due to its size and strength — the pillars are several meters thick. Controlled demolitions require precise calculations and carefully placed charges to ensure targeted destruction.

"Such bridges are built with a large safety margin. Remember how long they shelled the Antonivskyi Bridge, and even then, they never fully destroyed it. The Kerch Bridge is newer, built with better and more modern materials," he said.

Makohon added that based on limited photos and videos from the June 3 attack, the explosion was powerful enough to damage even the road surface and fencing, which are located relatively high above the water. "That tells us the force was serious. Water adds to the destructive effect, but it acts slowly — over years, not days or weeks," he said.

According to him, if the structural support is significantly compromised by the underwater explosion, Russia may still have time to repair it, though the process would be long and difficult. "It would require months of work by divers. Alternatively, they could install a steel cofferdam around the pillar, pump out the water, and access the site for standard repair work," the engineer explained.

Military expert Pavlo Narozhnyi stressed that such structures are designed to withstand major risks and loads. "They're built to survive collisions — with ships or ice floes, for example. Even a nearby nuclear blast that isn't directly targeted wouldn't destroy it," he said.

Meanwhile, military analyst Oleksii Hetman suggested this attack might have been a test run, with more to come. "The key point is that they managed to reach the bridge — likely with underwater drones, as the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has hinted. That means they can reach it again — and next time, use more explosives. I see this as a continuation of Operation Spiderweb. Sooner or later, the bridge will fall," Hetman said.

On June 3, the SBU carried out a special operation targeting the underwater supports of the Crimean Bridge. The mission had been months in the making. SBU agents planted explosives on the bridge piers, detonating the first device at 04:44, damaging the underwater structures at the sea floor level. The blast had an estimated yield of 1,100 kg in TNT equivalent.

By around 06:00 Kyiv time, Telegram channels monitoring the Crimean Bridge reported temporary closures. Traffic resumed but was halted again at around 15:00. Russian Telegram sources later reported that another Ukrainian drone attack near the bridge had been repelled.

Strikes on occupied Crimea — including areas near the Kerch Bridge — have become routine. The Russian government blames Ukraine for the attacks, and Ukraine has claimed responsibility for several, including confirmed SBU operations in October 2022 and July 2023.

Ukraine considers the Crimean Bridge an illegal structure on its sovereign territory — and therefore a legitimate military target.
