The most dominant soil types are Nitosols, Vertisols and Cambisols while, Pheazomes, Acrisols and Leptosols are associate soil types in different parts of the district [16].

Agriculture is the mainstay of farmers in the district which is characterized by mixed crop livestock production systems. According to [15], the most important crops grown in the district are cereals like wheat, teff, maize, barley and oats. Pulse crops such as horse beans and chickpeas are produced. Oil seed crops (linseed and Niger seed), Vegetables (onion, garlic, potato, tomato, pepper and carrot) and fruits (banana, mango, papaya, orange and lemon) are also produced in the district.
