This documentary, which is one day old, was made by RTS (Radio Télévision Suisse). It discusses and brings people's attention to the harsh/high risk work conditions, low pay, and in-work poverty that Ethiopian workers working for the above mentioned clothing giants at Hawassa Industrial Park are experiencing!
Hawassa Industrial Park is nothing but a bunch of slavery warehouses, where poor Ethiopian workers working eleven hours a day are paid less than 1 US dollar a day - four times less than in Bangladesh where the foreign clothing industry is known to pay the least in the world!
This is one of the reasons why Ethiopia has always been in the low human development category, positioning it at 173 out of 189 countries and territories - despite the fact that Ethiopia has lately been achieving phenomenal growth rate. It's worth reminding that GDP is not, on its own, an adequate gauge of a country's development - neither is it a measure of human well-being.
Eritrea, which is often demonized on this forum by a very limited number of wicked Tigrayan negativists, is, on the other hand, at 179 despite prolonged periods of conflict, severe droughts which have adversely affected Eritrea's agricultural economy, embargoes, and sanctions.
P.S. Just seeing Eritrea mentioned should not give you a free pass to talk about Eritrea! This documentary is about Ethiopia without any disrespect intended - as no African country is immune to this type of unscrupulous exploitation.
