Kigali, now Durban: Mara Group to open second African smartphone plant President Cyril Ramaphosa and Mara’s CEO will officially open SA’s first fully-fledged smartphone manufacturing plant in Durban on Thursday.

Suren Naidoo / 15 October 2019

Within ten days of opening its first Mara Phone factory in Rwanda’s capital Kigali last week, the Mara Group is set to open a second smartphone manufacturing plant at Durban’s Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on Thursday.

Mara Group CEO Ashish Thakkar confirmed to Moneyweb that President Cyril Ramaphosa together with other dignitaries will officially open the factory.

The opening comes within a year of Thakkar committing to invest $100 million (around R1.5 billion) into SA’s first fully-fledged smartphone factory during President Ramaphosa’s SA Investment Conference in Sandton last October.

Moneyweb broke the news in February that Dube TradePort, next to the King Shaka International Airport north of Durban, had secured the Mara Phone manufacturing plant, to be based at the SEZ.

The Dubai-based Mara Group opened its first Mara Phone factory at Kigali SEZ on Monday last week, which was attended by Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Speaking exclusively to Moneyweb this week, Thakkar said the group is investing around $200 million in the setup of both factories in Kigali and Durban, which will manufacture “made-in-Africa” smartphones for the first time. There are other mobile phone facilities in Africa, but these operate as assembly plants.

“Most importantly our high-quality but affordable smartphones will be manufactured at our Mara Phone plants in Rwanda and South Africa…. We’ve already invested $50 million in the Kigali plant and more than $50 million in the Durban plant,” he says, adding that the plants are the same size.

Thakkar says each plant will employ 200 people at the onset, of whom over 60% are women and over 90% youth. This will increase as production rises and the full $200 million investment is rolled out.

The Mara Phone plant at Dube TradePort will ultimately “generate over 1 500 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs” when it gets to full capacity over time.

The Rwanda operations will target the east and central Africa markets, while the SA plant will largely target the local market and export to Southern Africa.

“We currently have two smartphone models – the Mara X and Mara Z. In the future we will have more models such as the Mara X1, Mara Z1.

"Our capacity (at our plants) is a few million smartphones a year,” he adds.

On why he decided to invest in SA and to finalise the plan within a year, Thakkar says: “We strongly believe in the South African fundamentals and the leadership…. KwaZulu-Natal and Dube TradePort have been amazing and it’s the perfect location for Mara Phones in South Africa. Literally everyone, from the Department of Trade and Industry to Trade and Investment KZN, InvestDurban, Proudly SA, the Industrial Development Corporation and the presidential envoys for investment came together to make this investment happen.”

SA’s cellphone market is dominated by Asian and US brands, including the likes of South Korea’s Samsung, China’s Huawei and US-giant Apple’s iPhone. The rest of the continent is dominated by Chinese brands and Samsung.

Thakkar believes Mara Phone will make an impact on the SA market and the rest of Africa.

“We believe South Africans are very passionate about Proudly SA (products), especially if the quality is of global standards… However, we are also creating jobs in SA hence we are very confident that telcos, retailers and banks will appreciate and promote this [the Mara Phone) as they share the common vision of creating employment in SA.”

Pan-African investment conglomerate Mara Group was founded by Thakkar, a Ugandan-born self-made billionaire.

Mara Group’s investment into Dube TradePort is within the first phase of the SEZ, which has already attracted investments to the tune of around R4 billion.

Stupid, if your headline had said "entrepreneurs in Rwanda", there wouldn't be any debate.

But, you used the term- Rwanda.

And these people are indians, not rwandans.

The participants at the concluding ceremony with the UK Ambassador and UNICEF Representative.
UNICEF Eritrea/2019/Tadese

Eritrean youth conclude 5-day Idea Studio workshop on entrepreneurship skills for business creation

47 youth from all six regions worked to design innovative business ideas that promise economic prosperity and could help to drive social change in the couuntry.

UNICEF Eritrea and the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS) recently concluded a 5-day workshop on building entrepreneurship skills among youth in the capital Asmara.

Forty-seven youth from different Zobas, including innovators from emerging start-ups, worked under the guidance of Professor Rupesh K. Shrestha from Kathmandu University, Nepal. They created innovative business plans which included solar powered digital libraries, energy saving cooking-stoves, eco-friendly construction materials, education software and access for the hearing impaired/deaf, and low-cost energy-saving laptops.

The Idea Studio was initiated in 2018 in collaboration between the Ministry of National Development, the Ministry of Information, the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students, UNICEF Eritrea, Kathmandu University School of Management and Idea Studio Nepal. It is a work in progress initiative, seekig to ignite social change by promoting social innovation though knowledge creation, investment and enhance social justice to restore human dignity.

Participants worked in teams under the supervision of Professor Rupesh Shrestha from Kathmandu University, Nepal.

This workshop was a follow-up to the high-level Idea Studio consultation forum conducted in February 2019 to develop a critical mass of entrepreneurs and establish the Idea Studio in Eritrea. It provided knowledge and skills on human-centred design thinking, primary market research, process of ideation, customer identification and segmentation, developing high-level product specification, sales strategy and planning a value-based business model, and ultimately delivering a pitch for a business plan.
Traditional bricks require a lot of heat to bind them whereas the eco-friendly bricks made from volcanic ash can be made cheaper, and will better insulate against the extremes in weather,
said Asmait Hadish, a civil engineer who has in the past provided ideas for the city’s solid waste management programme.

The Idea Studio project was funded through a Government of Japan grant to UNICEF Eritrea in 2018 to support youth-centred programmes.

This team has already designed a prototype of efficient stoves that require 75 per cent less firewood than traditional stoves.
As four out of five Eritreans rely on firewood, our redesigned stoves use only 25 per cent of the firewood compared to traditional stoves. It will cut down on smoke inhalation and reduce acute respiratory infections among children and women.
Kibrom Okbazghi, whose company is already testing their prototype stoves with an army unit station.
We are happy to partner with UNICEF in adapting the Idea Studio model in Eritrea for our young people, and to help them seek innovative solutions for local problems,
said Mr. Saleh Ahmeddin, Chairperson of the NUEYS in concluding remarks to the participants.

A National Idea Studio Operational Manual was developed in early 2019 which charts out a roadmap, identifies capacities, resources and systems required to establish a fully-fledged Idea Studio in Eritrea.
I see immense potential among Eritrean youth. Knowledge creation and learning is the only way that will help to change the status quo. Please believe in yourselves and keep the spirits burning. Continue working on your ideas and implement it. Make it happen,
said Professor Shrestha to the participants whom he had coached over the five-day workshop.

The closing ceremony was a lively affair where all the participants who had worked in groups presented their business ideas followed by interesting deliberations on their business models.
I’m really proud of you as you have shown passion, curiosity and you’re looking for solutions. You also have good team spirit and I wish you all the best,
said Ambassador of the UK to Eritrea H.E Alisdair Walker to the participants.

The ultimate intention of the Idea Studio is to generate business ideas and foster entrepreneurship. The Idea Studio model will enable the innovators to come up with innovative solutions to solve the social problems and challenges in local communities.
The ideas and business models presented by the youths after the 5-day workshop was hugely impressive, it was like talking to aspiring CEOs of tomorrow; these young people came across as very confident, articulate, value-driven and solution-oriented to local problems, hence very promising,
said UNICEF Representative, Ms. Shaheen Nilofer.

All participants were presented with a certificate of achievement during the closing ceremony for the workshop.

Abey, atta wedi mebellet aba shawl?

Readers here are not as stupid, as you imagine them to be.

You tried to hoodwink everybody by claiming RWANDA, has started production of iPhones. The reason: you wanted to make a comparison b/n the two countries & leaders. I highlighted the fact that it's an indian company based in Dubai, doing it.

You retracted, by plastering pics of Rwandan entrepreneurs and I countered by Eritrean entrepreneurs, to be.

What have you nailed, you white dìck sûcking [deleted] hoe?
