Five players of Eritrea’s U-20 team have disappeared from their Hotel in Jinja ahead of the semi-finals of the on-going Cecafa U-20 Challenge Cup.
Eritrea will face Kenya’s Raising Stars in one of the semi-final games at the Fufa technical Center today, while Tanzania battle Sudan in the other match in Gulu.
The players who have vanished from the team hotel include; Hermon Fessehaye Yohannes, Mewael Tesfai Yosief, Simon Asmelash Mekonen, Deyben Gbtsawi Hintseab and first choice goalkeeper Girmay Hanibal.
Aimable Habimana, the Chairperson of Organising Committee for the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa) confirmed the disappearance of the players on Tuesday.
“The five players are missing at the Speke Apartments. We have decided to beef-up security around their hotel and the team so that we end the tournament on a good note,” added Habimana.
During the team training for the Eritrean team at the Fufa Technical Center on Tuesday only 14 players were available.
When asked, the team coach Haile Efrem Alemseghed said some of his players are sick.
However, the team has a history of disappearing when out for sporting engagements.
In 2012, eighteen members of the Eritrean team taking part in the 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup have vanished from Sky Hotel in Naalya, Kampala where they were residing.

Kenya/Eritrea: Kenya Battle Eritrea in Cecafa U-20 Semis

The Nation (Nairobi)
By Jeff Kinyanjui
The national football team will on Wednesday afternoon take on Eritrea in the semi-final of the ongoing Cecafa U-20 Championship at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, Uganda from 4pm.
Rising Stars coach Stanley Okumbi is confident his team will prevail, but has warned his charges not to underrate the opponents. Eritrea are the highest scoring side in the tournament and Okumbi is wary of the threat they could pose to his side.
"I had the chance to watch them (Eritrea) in their quarterfinal match against Zanzibar and they are very good defensively and offensively. It is going to be a very tough match, but I have said before that our aim is to win the tournament and to do that we have to play against the best teams.
We have our game plan and if we implement it, then I am comfortable we will be in the final," Okumbi said.
The team could, however, miss the services of highly-rated midfielder Musa Masika, who also did not feature in the 2-1 win over Burundi in the quarterfinal.
"He (Masika) will face a late fitness test. His chances are 50-50 but I have confidence in my whole squad. We missed three key players for the quarterfinal match but two are fully back and we are stronger now," he added.
Eritrea coach Haile Efrem anticipates a tough match too, but says his team is ready to show they are no pushovers.
"We know Kenya are a good side but we are ready to prove that we did not get to the semi-final by fluke," he said.
The team could be without Mawel Tesfai, who is the current leading scorer with six goals. The forward is nursing an injury and did not train on Wednesday.
Sudan will face Tanzania in the other semi-final in Gulu from 3pm.

WORLD CUP REFUGEES RETURN TO PITCH IN BOTSWANA
https://fifpro.org/news/eritrean-refuge ... otwana/en/
Published: 26 June 2018

Ten refugee footballers from Eritrea who sought asylum after a 2015 World Cup qualifier were back on the pitch last week in a tournament arranged by the Botswana player association to show solidarity with their situation.
Footballers Union Botswana (FUB) organized the one-day competition at the Dukwi refugee camp in north Botswana to coincide with World Refugee Day on June 20.
The 10 footballers refused to return home after playing a national-team match in Botswana. They are living at the camp, which houses more than 2,000 refugees from countries including Congo, Namibia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Onalethata Tshekiso, a former Botswana national-team player who is president of FUB, was among three teams of former players who took part in the tournament against a refugee team, which included the Eritreans.
The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR uses World Refugee Day to raise awareness for millions of people who have been forced to flee and acknowledge their strength, courage, and perseverance. FUB got support from the UNHCR and the Botswana government to organize the tournament.
During the event, various former players engaged with children in the camp to educate them about the dangers of alcohol, drugs, HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy, as these are all serious problems among youth.
These former players are part of FUB’s outreach program and they have been trained for these meetings.

Among the spectators was Assistant Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development Dikgang Philip Makgalemele (second person left)

FUB secretary general Kgosana Masaseng said. The footballers can probably never return to their country as they are not safe there,
We tried to bring back joy to them with what they love most, playing football.
The tournament was a massive success, so many people were happy and singing.

My Digital Weyane mind wonders if the defection of some Eritrean players is worse than the tragic deaths of our Tegaru refugees crossing the Red Sea en route to Yemen.
I personally would rather defect than becoming a tasty meal for the Red Sea sharks, but I understand the psychological relief we Digital Weyane get from news of Eritrean defection that seems to help us put our own traumatic tragic incidents out of our heads momentarily.
If Opioid overdose is declared a crisis, then our addiction to negative news about Eritrea should also be declared as such. The hardest part of addiction recovery is admitting your problem. Frankly speaking, Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a crisis in our Digital Weyane community that is fast becoming an epidemic.
