MEDEMER explained! Abiy sits with Meaza! Is the approach too shallow?

Post by gearhead » 14 Sep 2019, 21:19

I have huge doubts about applicability of transformational leadership approach to the politics of ethiopia.

Transformational leadership was invented for corporate applications where vision and goals are clear and mandatory! To the most part, corporate objectives demand critical thinking, and logic is part and parcel of the culture! Transformational leadership is then picked as a method/tool of making things happen! It is one approach amongst many of manifesting clearly defined and mandatory targets in an environment of rational thinking.

None of the prevailing conditions that lend to the applicability of transformational leadership exists in ethiopia!

I am not buying PMs simplification of prevailing conditions which partly invalidates his approach!

Am I missing something?

This is not good time to write at length about Medemer or Transformational leadership. gerarhead is wrong .

It is true that a deep conceptualization of Medemer has not been done because none of its inventors really know the root of the term medemer. The concept essentially means growth or development. It is a vastly rich concept that includes the notion of positivity and addictiveness. I will finish listening the interview and will have more to say.

Regarding his leadership model, Abiye actually believes in the model of servant leadership which might be too idealistic for Ethiopian hard reality driven environment. I have in fact commented in the past that he should consider the transformational model.

Transformational Leadership, articulated by Professor James M. Burns is a Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece. Published in 2003, I have been studying the book since June 26, 2005. There has never been a book on leadership and authoritative as this one. This is not about management and is not related business management or organizational theory. This book is gold. I advise Folks to get a copy and own a timeless masterpiece!!

As far as I understood the idea of Medemer in the explanation of the PM, it deals with a change of paradigm of the way we deal with our political and other aspects of social affairs. The paradigm should change from the hitherto competing against each other to competing with each other and there by realize the effects of synergy. What we can’t, or difficult to, achieve alone should be realizable when we come together and coordinate our resources for a better results for all the stakeholders of the undertaking.

The so called global players of the world economies came from the intermediate steps of mergers and acquisitions and thereby enabling the stakeholders of their respective companies to realize the effect of synergy.

He used to explain the same effect of synergy that could be realized, if Djibouti and Ethiopia, as an instance, can cooperate among each other. In which case Djibouti has got a coast line, which Ethiopia lacks, and Ethiopia has got coffee, which Djibouti lacks, but both countries could have both of these resources if they cooperate wisely. I don’t understand why these idea shouldn’t be valid, if managed correctly and implemented carefully. For the careful implementation we need then a management (leadership) quality.

If you argue, then it would be better if you could specify whether the idea lacks valid foundation or the idea could be true but there could be lack of qualified leadership to realize it. Then we can also understand the basis of your argument(s).
