Ethiopia’s Economy: Mamo Mihretu on Industrialisation, Growth and Economic Reform
Economist Mamo Mihretu - a brilliant, well educated rising star in modern day Ethiopian political economy. When I see intelligence like his is when I know that Ethiopia is going to be in good hands. I wish I knew more about his academic and intellectual background.

Ethiopia ranked the poorest country in the world.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2024 reveals that 1.1 billion people live in acute poverty, with 40% in conflict zones. Ethiopia highlights these issues, with 72% of its population multidimensionally poor amid ongoing conflicts. The government’s misaligned priorities exacerbate the crisis, led by claims of prosperity amid worsening conditions.
Furthermore, of Ethiopia’s 120 million population, 86 million are in poverty—a staggering 72%—the highest percentage of a population in poverty in the world. Additionally, of the 86 million in poverty, 50% are children. (Ethiopian Policy Institute)

Has the living standards of Ethiopians improved? Are they paying less taxes, are living expenses cheaper, Is clean treated water supply increased and available, is electricity available without interruptions, how about healthcare services, are wages increasing mitigated by inflation factors? Do ethiopians enjoy peace or are they not traumatized by overwhelming violence by the state of Ethiopia as well armed political groups as well as outlaws.
Aren't you just celebrating the ever fattening pockets of the gov of Abiy Ahmed's network of friends?
