Why Ethiopia should expand the enset plant than Teff

Post by Odie » 14 May 2026, 12:18

Expanding the enset plant (false banana) over teff is crucial for Ethiopia’s food security because it is far more resilient to climate change, provides a higher caloric yield, is harvestable year-round, and acts as a famine-resistant "living bank" for over 20 million people, whereas teff is less productive and more vulnerable. Enset can be stored for years, while teff requires intense seasonal cultivation.

Key Reasons for Expanding Enset Over Teff:
* Drought and Climate Resilience: Enset is highly resistant to drought, heavy rains, and flooding. While teff is a seasonal cereal vulnerable to climate variations, enset stands as a perennial crop, providing food security in the highlands when other crops fail.
* Superior Food Security (Perennial "Bank"): Enset is known as a "tree against hunger." Unlike seasonal cereals like teff, it can be harvested at any time of the year over a long period (4–5 years).
* High Yield/Productivity: Enset produces significantly higher food volume per hectare and per plant compared to major cereals like wheat or teff.
* Long-Term Storage: Fermented enset products (kocho) can be stored in pits for several years without losing nutritional value, serving as a buffer against food scarcity.
* Nutritional Value: Enset provides high nutritional value, rich in carbohydrates, potassium, calcium, and iron.
* Broad Utility: Beyond food, enset is used for animal fodder, building materials, and fiber, and it can be planted in areas not suitable for traditional cereal cultivation.
*
While teff is a popular cultural food, expanding enset is more viable for overcoming food insecurity, particularly in famine-prone areas of Ethiopia.

so is famine prone? ቆምጬ specially wolo

Teff is an ancient grain that won’t be compatible with growing population of Ethiopia and should be left behind or as occasional meal like the political stagnation of ቆምጬ ብርጌድ
