During the Eritrean War of Independence (1961–1991), the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) established a sophisticated, hidden pharmaceutical factory to produce its own medicines, driven by a doctrine of self-reliance. Operating under the cover of darkness, these facilities produced approximately 40% of the top 187 EPLF-approved drugs needed for the conflict.
