Gulf War: Risk and Opportunity for Ethiopian Airlines

A Gulf war would initially disrupt Ethiopian Airlines through airspace restrictions, higher insurance costs, and passenger uncertainty on routes linked to the Middle East. However, if the conflict continues and reduces transit traffic through Gulf hubs, the situation could shift in Ethiopian Airlines’ favor.

Major Gulf carriers—Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad Airways—collectively handle well over 100 million passengers annually, much of it sixth-freedom traffic connecting Africa, Europe, Asia, USA & Australia . If prolonged instability diverts even 10–15% of this traffic, roughly 10–15 million passengers could seek alternative hubs. With about 140 aircraft and over 20 million annual passengers, Ethiopian Airlines—operating from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport—is well positioned to capture part of this shift. Ethiopian could absorb excess capacity and skilled personnel from struggling Gulf carriers, accelerating its growth. In effect, prolonged instability could help Ethiopian Airlines rise as a key intercontinental player.

However, this opportunity depends on Ethiopia’s internal stability. If domestic conflicts remain unresolved or continue to be addressed mainly through force, security concerns could weaken Addis Ababa’s role as a transit hub. In that case, the same instability could threaten the long-term competitiveness and survival of Ethiopian Airlines.

In short, a prolonged Gulf conflict could redirect global aviation traffic toward Ethiopia—but only if internal stability is preserved. The message for Abiy from Axumezana, the servant of Jesus Christ, is "No War" with Tigray, Eritrea, Amhara and Oromia , make peace with every one and wait for the right time to secure access to the Sea!
