Yea, it's painful to watch them struggle to say what they want to say in English. Weak English proficiency in Ethiopia is across the board. Almost each and every Ethiopian college and university graduate struggles to express their thoughts in English.

It has something to do with the promotion of Amharic as the language of Ethiopian identity. Do they know their English is low in the world scale of English standards? I doubt they do. They believe they can speak English well enough and grab the mic with confidence. But we know their English is not just terrible, it's painful to watch them, at a more painful level than the Paki Sajid the journalist. As you said embarassing to themselves and the country.

As an Eritrean, I had many opportunities to work and study with Ethiopians; followed their media, history and personalities, diplomats and ministers as well. With all their faults and weaknesses, the Ethiopians that I knew always marveled in communication and manners in any language and in any stage. I am very sad to see Ethiopians being represented by such incompetent individuals.
Even with limited formal education, people like Yidnekachew Tesema, Meles Zanawi, Paulos Gnogno, Haile Gebreselasie, ... were at the top of the game when they put their views forward.

I have read pedagogical research documents which found that education in first lsnguage or mother tongue helps students understand subject matters better than education in second or third languages. This apparent truth is also established by research.

But, I have not read a research outcome associating scripts with speed of acquiring knowledge.

Goshu Welde had the benefit of learning all subjects in English from primary thru secondary schools in Gore, Illubabor and A.A., respectively; and Amharic only as a subject. This was the curticulum in Ethiopia until 1965, the year in which all subjects were taught in Amharic upto Grade 6 and Amharic language as a subject. Damn the Jews who pursuaded the dimwit and dwarf Haile Sellasie to impose linguistic hegemony on multi-nations Ethiopia laying the foundation for resentment against Amara.

Wolde attended Military Academy from 1960-63 in English. He was awarded Sword of Honor, as he completed his military subjects as a topper.

He then joined Addis Ababa University from which he received Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and later attended the Yale University graduated with Master of Laws degree (LLM).

I have a theory that writing a language using a script that was invented for that language is more likely to be effective for developing that language. Do you agree or disagree with my theory?

Scripts can also be modified to symbolize specific sounds of a language. For example, Turkey uses Latin scripts and adds modifying attachements to symbolize a sound that doesn't get represented in abcd alphabets.

Amharic can be written in Arabic or Greek or Chinese scripts with some modifications to represent sounds typical to the language.

Harari language is a semitic language. It doesn't use Geez to write it. It uses Latin scripts.

The adoption of an existing script or modifying it or totally rejecting it and adopting another or creating a new one from scratch has always been a choice to further political identity.

For example the Greeks were oppressors of the Romans. When Rome got stronger, they created Roman scripts from the Greek alphabets as expression of freedom from the Greeks and as symbol of their indepedent identity.

The Somalis, as soon they got independent from European colonizers, they created their own scripts as a symbol of their political identity.

When the Young Turks created the present nation of Turkey, to distance themselves from the past as an empire in Asia, now that they were an European nation, they adopted Latin scripts to write their language to show a change in their political identity.
