Why are the Darood Jeberti against Somaliland?

Post by Mesob » 29 Dec 2025, 01:00

Why are the Darood Jeberti who have profited the most from the old Somalia under Ziad Barre, the current destruction of Somalia and historically from the slave trade in the Horn of African region, but these days oppose to the independence of the long suffering proud Somalilanders?

The Dhulbahante clan (part of the Harti/Darod family) is the primary group currently opposing Somaliland's authority, seeking to create a separate "SSC- Khatumo" state within Somalia. Centered in Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn, they reject Somaliland's rule, largely due to tensions with the dominant Isaaq clan.
Key details regarding this opposition:

Location and Conflict: The conflict is focused on the disputed city of Las Anod, where Dhulbahante militia clashed with Somaliland forces.
Motivations: The Dhulbahante have long been uncomfortable with the Isaaq-led administration of Somaliland and have sought to align with the Puntland state of Somalia or create their own, citing deeper family ties within the Harti/Darod clan.
Historical Context: This opposition is rooted in historical rivalries, with the Dhulbahante resisting British colonial rule, while the Isaaq were generally more accepting of it.

While the Somaliland government is predominantly Isaaq, other smaller groups or clans in border areas may have varying degrees of alignment, but the Dhulbahante are the main clan explicitly acting against the Somaliland statehood project in recent years.
