Dr. Abiy Can Gain Oromo Support by Promoting Oromic and by Reclaiming Assab!

At present, Dr. Abiy has made many enemies due to his own mistakes and shortcomings. Even a majority of the Oromo people, who once strongly supported him, have turned against him. Over time, he has lost the broad backing of the country’s diverse nations and peoples that he enjoyed in the early days of his leadership. Now, in an effort to shield himself from the rising tide of change and potential revolution, he appears to be seeking refuge in his Oromo identity.
However, regaining the trust and support of the Oromo will not be easy. Perhaps the only meaningful step he can take—the most powerful card he has left—is the long-awaited and widely supported move to promote Oromic as a primary working language of the federal government. This includes its use in key institutions such as the office of the Prime Minister, the Parliament, the Cabinet, the Judiciary, the Military, and the Security Services, effectively replacing Amharic in those spheres. Additionally, his effort to reclaim Assab could help him gain the support of the Oromo people in general—and my own support in particular.
