We can debate architecture on another thread, recognizing the fact that aesthetic is subjective to the most part (beauty is in the eye of the beholder). For example, I consider National Theatre to be one of the best public buildings and urban structures in Addis. Most of the so-called new or “modern buildings” are copied from elsewhere & they are boring, hardly respect the urban fabric nor reflect the place & culture they are built in.

For example, I consider these buildings to be random & ugly:

I don’t want to generalize because there are impressive new buildings such as the new Lideta Mall, the new buildings for the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia & African Union, Abrehot Library, embassy of the Netherlands, S.A. Embassy, etc.

The building doesn’t bother me as far as I am concerned. What I hate is the content & exterior alterations:

Let me explain;

- Installing the tribalist cadres, Genet Gudit & Biramtu Nega right in front of the historic Meyazia 27 Square is disgraceful & incompatible with the heritage.
- The building was designed with the intent that it embraces & complement the square while it remains open & accessible to the public. Cursed Derg, Woyane & PP came in & fenced and closed it off from the public, making the building feel like an urban-center jail.
- Idiotic PP cadres painted the exterior with a bright blue color, reducing the original monumental elegance to a children’s book illustration.

You know I hate that building. I wish MoE got some better modern building and that building was removed. For some reason, I hate the architecture, and it is old.

Well, the country is "blessed" with a colonel who all the time enjoys war and conflict. We were told he said, 2/3 of Ethiopians are nonproductive and should be spent on something useful including for fighting. So, the youth failed schooling means good news for PP  It won't worry to hire them with no degree (jobs are not available even with degrees as we were told) and more youth to recruit for war to deal with the "lice"
It may have been well designed and beautiful at its time. That is why it is still standing strong. It may be historical. However aesthetically it is no more appealing for the current age in my openion. I have been inside and I don’t like it personally. I don’t like it the way maintained. As it is a gov structure it is not maintained well. I also associate it with bad people the likes of Genet etc and I don’t like it. Also it does not fit the era. The same for ብሄራዊ theater. Both structures need to be preserved for historical reasons may be as kind of museum (education in Ethiopia museum and theater in Ethiopia museum) and build new state of the art buildings for MoE and National theater when the country is at peace with itself from this forum to the whole nation.

ሴተኛ አዳሪ ልጅ
Horsie,
Where is this demeaning mothers and disrespect to women came from? You used it constantly when you are cornered. That tells us who you are.

By the way do not call others a woyannies while embracing tight the brain child of the Weyannies.

Who saved the woyannies from annihilation in the middle of a decisive war by making a secret deal behind the warriors?
You are such stupid even your old age couldn’t help.

አድናቂ?

What the heck are you talking about? Did I ask you to embellish me or others? And who is “የነሱ?” And what has my opinion on good and bad architecture anything to do with “cadres?”

Abrehot is built recently and it’s a beautiful piece of art but i would be dishonest to lump it up with ugly buildings just because I dislike PP. Likewise, Lideta Mall was built during Woyane. Whereas so many disgusting buildings were built during Derg, such as the Ethiopian Parliament, Ethiopian Television, Ethiopian Shipping Lines, etc. The National Theatre aka Cinema Marconi doesn’t have a poetic history as it was originated during fascist Italy. While I detest colonialism, I advocate for preservation of their irreplaceable building heritages.

Strange that you short-circuited & took my comments personal!

Ethiopia Can No Longer Deny Its Education Crisis
Miraculously, this is the kind of thought that preoccupied me after my comments here yesterday:

Can you explain how anyone with a marginal intelligence may be able to work with anyone else who lacks that marginal intelligence?

FACT: Among others, I engaged you and Semira on this forum shortly after I joined it over 18 years ago. I engaged because I got the impression that you both had an enlightened rational thinking.

Sadly, I ignored both of you shortly after my attempts because each of you gave me the impression that you are out of touch about an enlightened discussion. You even went to the extent of accusing me that you know the source of the word enlightenment. I passed it in amusement.

Another participant that I engaged, who was willing to respond, was hmantes. Even if we disagreed on an issue, his rationalism suggested to me that he was the kind of participant I could have a meaningful discussion with. He has taken a leave of absence from this forum, at least by that screen name.

I do not know each of you personally.

So many years later, did you have the educational qualifications to answer a simple question rationally and meaningfully?

You are a symptom of Ethiopia’s educational crisis. You aren’t alone.

Reflecting that preoccupied much of my time after my comments yesterday until I read your title and said to myself this is it.

My reflections showed:

Nega Doma,
Always vague and confused. It would have been a privilege to come out of the educational institution of emperor Haile Selassie. And I would have figured out the plot of Horus and the students movement to harm the beautiful country and destroy it before it takes root.
Unfortunately I am from a different generation who is trying to clean out the mess Horus and his comrades left to the down to earth people of Ethiopia.
And they are still fucking around and breeding the likes of you.

Buddy, when did I say I am vegetarian?

I said aesthetics are fundamentally subjective. You hate old buildings just for the reason that they are old and I argued that generalization is dangerous. For example, I would demolish the old ministry of defense because it doesn’t fit in the current urban fabric & it’s an eyesore and has no public relevance what so ever. I love MoE and National Theatre. What are going to do about it? Do you want me to say “I hate them” just to appease you.

Let me explain;

2.3 Million Failed Before, Half a Million Failed This Year: Ethiopia Can No Longer Deny Its Education Crisis

That is right!
I said aesthetically because I am not an architect or structural engineer by training which I suspect you have some background. The frame of the old MoE building looks quite great and probably was a wonder project at its time. And it was built following a standard.
I also appreciate your taste for old things such as National theater in ለገሃር a place I grew up. I thought the country deserves better, more technologically advanced bigger theater building than that. The same for the MoE building. But not something to talk about it now as the country has more serious problems such as lack of peace, wanton killing, detention, corruption…and for the majority food security and security for existence is a big issue.
I just feel it may be wasting time on discussing issues like this is and close it here.

This sounds like the clash of Birratu Naga with Engineer Hailu Shawel in matters of Kinijit.

Odius favoring modernization of city buildings. Selam favoring to save old architecture in their places and building new ones in accordance with local tase and in the suburbs of Ethiopian cities and towns without defining the local taste.

They fought enough until each got tired. They have not gone their separate ways as did Birratu and Shawel. Birratu to PP. Shawel to his grave.

What an end! Destinations they never had imagined.
