Triumphant Dr. Abiy Ahmed: From Pro-Amharic Horse to Pro-Oromic Hero?

The only path for Dr. Abiy Ahmed to emerge triumphant from his current political struggle is by fully aligning himself with the Oromo cause and uniting the Oromo people behind him. The growing cooperation among Fànno, Shabiya, and Woyane, with apparent intentions to march on the palace in Finfinné, should be a serious warning. This could be a déjà vu of 1991, when Shabiya, TPLF, and the Biden-led coalition fought against Mengistu’s Derg regime.
Dr. Abiy’s attempt to revive an Ethiopiawinet-based narrative, similar to Mengistu’s strategy, risks leading his Prosperity Party (Biltsigina) down the same doomed path as the Derg. The Oromo Liberation Army’s (OLA) apparent openness to collaborating with this northern alliance further reinforces the sense of historical repetition.
To prevent this cycle from repeating, Dr. Abiy must return wholeheartedly to the Oromo nationalist camp and commit to implementing the Oromo vision. This includes, most importantly, recognizing Oromic as the primary working language of the federation, replacing Amharic. With such a move, he can be transformed from his current identity as an pro-Amharic horse into a future noble pro-Oromic hero.
