Sep 6, 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment; Ministry of Marine Resources; Forest and Wildlife Authority; and the National Higher Education and Research Institute, organized a National Conference on Eritrea’s Fauna and Flora in Asmara. The conference was held at the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) conference hall on 5 September, 2025. The event, conducted under the theme
Conservation of Eritrea's Fauna and Flora Safeguards Our Future,
was attended by Ministers, senior government officials, representatives from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and relevant experts.

Director General of the Regulatory Services Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Tekleab Mesghena, in his introductory remarks, emphasized the significance of this landmark event, stating that
this conference is an important milestone in our national nature conservation efforts.
Mr. Tekleab also commended the active and collaborative efforts of senior experts from the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment; Ministry of Marine Resources; Forest and Wildlife Authority; and the National Higher Education and Research Institute. Furthermore, he noted that, thanks to the efforts of these institutions over the past five years, about 5,000 terrestrial and aquatic fauna and flora species have been identified, documented, and included in a national database.

Mr. Amanuel Negassi, representing the Minister of Agriculture, stressed that Eritrea’s fauna and flora are the foundation of the nation’s economy, heritage, and identity. He urged the rehabilitation of Eritrea’s rich biodiversity by addressing challenges posed by climate change, habitat loss, unsustainable exploitation, and limited resources. He also called for stronger partnerships with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Minister of Marine Resources, Mr. Tewelde Kelati, emphasized that the conservation and management of marine resources and the environment are central tasks of his Ministry. He called for the utilization of the newly developed National Database on Fauna and Flora for informed decision-making and collaborative scientific research, underscoring the need to enhance it through active community participation.

During the event, the General Manager of the Forest and Wildlife Authority praised the establishment of the national database, while calling for practical steps toward rehabilitating the country’s fauna and flora and addressing the root causes of threats to biodiversity.

Mr. Tesfay Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, highlighted the critical role of environmental stewardship in ensuring a sustainable future, stating:
Biodiversity, of which flora and fauna constitute essential components, is fundamental to human health and livelihood.
He underscored that the loss of biodiversity, particularly fauna and flora, can be reversed through concerted nature-based rehabilitation actions and continuous awareness-raising programs. Finally, he noted that the database will serve as a critical input for the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2030), currently under preparation.

During the conference, papers were presented and discussed on the objectives and processes of registering and documenting Eritrea’s fauna and flora, the characteristics of the country’s terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, and the structure and functionality of the database. Participants and selected thematic groups engaged in thorough discussions on these topics.

I kind of like it...as it gives us a chance to address these wild claims and nip it in the bud...so here we go.

To those claiming ‘access to the sea’ comes with a free buffet of oil, fish, and minerals, nice try, but no. Having access doesn’t mean you get to dig, drill, or fish—just to pass through. It does not mean Ethiopia suddenly owns the Red Sea pantry. Eritrea, like every coastal state, has full sovereign rights over its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), 200 nautical miles wide and brimming with resources.

And here’s the kicker…the Red Sea is already carved up. Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt all have EEZs stretching across it. What is “international” here is only the right of passage, not the right to fish, drill, or scoop up minerals. Eritrea's EEZ alone is slightly larger than its land area, a vast maritime domain that makes it one of the region’s most strategic coastal states. So, if you use Eritrean ports, congratulations…you get a docking space. That’s it. The fish, oil, and minerals don’t come with your ticket.

In other words, yes, you can float your ship, wave at the coastline, and post selfies with the sunset. But the resources remain Eritrean. International law says “freedom of navigation,” not a free-for-all buffet…The fish in the sea, the oil under the seabed, and the minerals along the continental shelf remain Eritrean. International law is clear…freedom of navigation guarantees that you can sail through, not that you get a free pass to the country’s resources.

He also muttered something about “international waters” … well, let’s clear that up too. Beyond national EEZs, the seabed is a global commons managed by the International Seabed Authority (ISA). That means even if a landlocked state gains port access, it cannot legally claim or exploit minerals or resources beyond Eritrea’s EEZ. Those areas are governed by international law for the benefit of ALL, not for unilateral grabs. There’s simply no escaping the rules of international law.

Now, about the Afar gimmick being recycled to claim Red Sea territories. Let’s be clear… sovereignty isn’t a karaoke contest where every ethnic group gets a verse. Maps may bend, ambitions may stretch, but sovereignty does not. Eritrea's borders are internationally recognized, and no amount of “what about me?” ethnic arguments can erase that legal fact.

If ethnicity alone dictated borders, Africa would dissolve overnight into a jigsaw puzzle of chaos. Landlocked states from Mali to Uganda to Zimbabwe all have ethnic groups straddling borders, yet none of them is entitled to redraw maps or claim another country’s coast.

And finally, Assab. Thank you, Sisay Agena, for tracing the latest fairy tale back to the Derg. Very imaginative, but international law doesn’t bend to scribbles on maps made by an occupying force. The Derg had no authority to redraw Eritrea's borders. Assab is Eritrean, was, is, and will remain so. These wayward PP cronies ought to stop trying to hoodwink the suffering people of Ethiopia with legalese, gimmicks, and shallow talking points.

Ethiopia’s leaders might try respecting international law for once, instead of treating it like play-dough to be twisted into whatever shape suits their ambitions They should stop auditioning as amateur law-makers and start respecting the law that already exists. Here’s a thought… maybe retire the full-time workshop in twisting and stretching international law beyond recognition…and try following it instead.

@AligidirEritrea

Contrary to what the Abiy Ahmed regime stated in the press release, Abiy discussed his failed war against FANO and his plans for war against Eritrea. Word on the street is that he lectured, taunted, admonished, and threatened his field generals; but not the generals who stay comfortably in Addis Ababa. In a typical divide-and-conquer manner, Abiy first expressed his anger at the field generals leading his war against FANO in the Amhara region. He claimed they had failed to capture even a single commander from the FANO group, which he intended to display as part of his propaganda leading up to the GERD inauguration. He accused the commanders in the field of incompetence and allegedly blamed them for arming and feeding both their troops and the FANO fighters.

What is bizarre is that Abiy targeted the field generals but didn't confront his Addis Ababa generals, who are the responsible ones for the strategy behind his failed war against FANO.

Another significant topic of his lecture to the generals, was his plan and desire to capture the Eritrean port of Assab. This part of the lecture was supposedly brief for two reasons: it is both politically and militarily dangerous, for Abiy to delve into. He knows that his generals are well aware that the politics of waging war with Eritrea over its ports, are completely unacceptable in the Tigray and Afar regions. It is public knowledge, that leaders in both regions have violently rejected Abiy's rhetoric and plan. Many reports indicate that over half of the Afar region leaders have abandoned their posts in the last five months and fled to Eritrea, Djibouti, and the Tigray region. Needless to say, Abiy supposedly told his top commanders he intends to capture the Assab port and said, “get ready.”

Lastly, in typical Abiy’s childish fashion, he told his generals that the “drone factory” he recently showcased as part of his regime’s military capability was built for export purposes. This claim is shamelessly ridiculous, because what he displayed was merely a warehouse filled with light-show drones and a few people assembling them. His generals know this, too.

All in all, Abiy's behavior reflects a chaotic leader at the end of his reign. The Ethiopian journalist Messay Mekonnen remarked yesterday that Abiy's actions resemble those of Hitler towards the end of his regime, as he lectured, taunted, admonished, threatened, and ultimately blamed his field generals. We've seen those movie scenes of Hitler's final hour in his bunker with his generals. Clearly, these factors paint a picture of Abiy Ahmed's leadership that is increasingly untenable and more like a spectacle, putting Ethiopia at serious risk of fragmentation.

If shame and embarrassment had a picture, the sodomite dictator of Eritrea would be it.
The country has only one basketball hall in the entire nation — and even that has never been renovated for the last 30 years. and the funny thing is, here is weizero shitmeslo reporting about it.
