Former Somaliland President Muse Bihi has acknowledged that the federal government of Somalia came out on top in the high-stakes row over a maritime MoU signed earlier last year with Ethiopia.
In a candid interview, Bihi said the deal, which was intended to grant Ethiopia access to the Red Sea through Somaliland waters, faltered under intense international opposition.
“The matter on our side was ready, but Ethiopia failed to move it forward,” he said. “African Union, the Arab League led by Egypt, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation all sided with Somalia.”
According to Bihi, Addis Ababa was warned of serious consequences, including the potential loss of the African Union headquarters in its capital. “Arab states applied heavy pressure, and the OIC unanimously agreed Ethiopia was wrong.
That is what forced the deal to collapse,” he explained.
