The evidence documenting Eritrea’s historic statehood and Ethiopia’s expansionist land-grab ambitions is overwhelming. One striking example comes from declassified U.S. State Department minutes of a March 1949 meeting between Italian Ambassador Tarchiani and Secretary of State Dean Rusk, where it was noted:
Yet, Ethiopian expansionists continue to peddle the myth that Eritrea was nothing more than a colonial creation of Italy, and that it was only Italian occupation which denied them access to the sea—when in truth, the historical record tells a very different story.

Italy had on numerous occasions expressed its complete willingness to the cession of the port of Assab and a portion of southern Eritrea to Ethiopia.
