Magnitude of internally displaced people in ethnic federated Ethiopia since Abiy Ahmed assumed power

Post by Odie » 25 Aug 2025, 09:23

1. National figures by year
2018
Ethiopia’s IDP population surged from 1.7 million to 2.6 million by the end of 2018.
UNHCR Reporting
A major driver was inter-ethnic conflict—particularly the Gedeo–Guji clashes, which alone displaced around 800,000 Gedeo people.
Wikipedia
Additional conflict in Benishangul‑Gumuz and West & East Wellega zones displaced nearly 192,000 more people.
Reddit
Droughts and floods also contributed but specific figures for that year are less detailed.

2019
Ethiopia saw 3.19 million new displacements, ranking third globally that year.
ReliefWeb
Ongoing ethnic conflicts continued to drive displacement.

2020
At the end of 2020, IDPs due to drought numbered about 331,000 countrywide.
In Somali region alone, nearly 278,000 were displaced by drought.
UNDP Data

2021
Total internal displacements from conflict and violence reached approximately 5.14 million.
IDMC
Disasters (floods, drought, land movement, wildfires) added about 240,000 displacements.
IDMC
Another source reported around 4.2 million IDPs by end of

2021, with 3.6 million due to conflict and violence and others due to disasters.
UNDP Data
Breaking it down by cause (per Global Focus for 2021): 68% due to inter‑communal conflict, 19% due to drought, and 6% due to seasonal floods.
UNHCR Reporting

2022
As of April 2022 (IOM DTM), around 2.75 million IDPs were tracked at accessible sites across 11 regions—but Tigray data were not included.
DTM

2023
Between August–September 2023, IOM DTM recorded over 3.45 million IDPs in accessible sites across 12 regions. Some areas like Amhara had lower coverage.
IOM Ethiopia

2024
By mid‑2024, an estimated 4.5 million people were internally displaced (both urban and rural), especially in Somali, Oromia, and Tigray regions. The majority were displaced due to conflict, which peaked in 2021.
UNOCHA
End-of-year breakdown shows 2.4 million IDPs due to conflict & violence, and 757,000 due to disasters (floods, drought, earthquake), with the latter being one of the highest globally.
IDMC

2. Regional hotspots & specific incidents
Gedeo–Guji (2018): Roughly 800,000 people displaced in southern Ethiopia.
Wikipedia

Benishangul-Gumuz & Wellega zones: ~192,000 displaced in 2018.
Reddit
Somali, Oromia, Tigray (2024): These regions housed the highest number of IDPs.
UNOCHA
Other notable clashes:

2021 Ataye (Amhara/Oromia): Up to 328,000 people displaced.
Wikipedia

When all this was happening the poverty and conflict promoting party was at war with its own people, growing trees for graveyard shades, worsening displacement by a white elephant project called corridor and park ranging. The leaders were playing soccer, gym, athletics, hammocking and biking and sauna bathing. A joke on the public.
Most of the displacements were man made and from ethnic politics and poor governance.

Where is the figure for displaced Mesqan Gurages numbering about 60,000? How about Gurages in Welkite leaving their shops and homes, Mwahir(Aklil) and Abeshge, Sodo leaving their farms estimated at about 30,000?
You deiberately ommitted them. Why?

Abiy is like the hope less ostrich that buries its head in sand to escape from death.. He still tries to deny facts & confuse the people who are facing daily security threats, hyper inflation & abuse by the corrupted civil service.
