You are right, ethiopia is still full of peasants and the rural economy is still in medieval age. However, the liberalising drive of the urban economy in the telecom and banking sectors, the reopening of securities exchange, hopefully soon aviation and land will follow to be privatised too... this means for what it is worth, a more liberalised economy is more efficient at allocating resources to the most productive and hardworking than an illiberal one. Derg regime did exactly what you advocated, they tried to invest in the rural populace through collectivization, and literacy campaigns like edget behibret without a domestic market system which is needed to produce the income needed to invest in your rural folks. Don't get me wrong Abiy Ahmed is a serial bungler. He bungled the tigray war and will continue to bungle. But an Abiy Ahmed with a liberal economy will last longer on the throne than Abiy Ahmed with a desolate illiberal one.

Liberal economy is what gave the West try development BUT, liberalizing merely mean for everybody to work hard and give and exchange goods and services without exploitation.
