Does Jordan Have Any Leverage On Trump's Gaza Plan?

Post by Somaliman » 13 Feb 2025, 20:54

Sure, Jordan relies upon US aid and its normalisation with Israel. But, make no mistake, this is not without a quid pro quo.

It has leverage on the US, as Jordan is hosting US military bases on its soil - and this is not for free.

It has equally leverage on Israel, as Jordan secures the eastern front of the Jordan River for Israel, as this front is the closest border to Israel’s heartland - the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv-Haifa triangle - which holds 70% of Israel's population and 80% of its economic infrastructure.

On average, Jordan receives $1.5 billion per year from the US. As you could imagine, most of this sum is never handed to the government of Jordan but useless US agencies, like USAID. Therefore, Saudi Arabia and the UAE could easily cover this, had Trump decided to cut US aid to Jordan.

So, stop confusing Jordan with Tigray, which relies on US aid for its existence.
