"Sle-mariam"!, "Sle-mariam"! x5. A summer phenomena in all of Gurage.
Unshaven dark faces of middle-aged men at our doors and every house in Gurage villages, wearing tattered clothes, with abujedi bags hanging from their hands, and a stick in their hands, they stood at our door every summer blurting out at the height of their throats, "sle-mariam, sle-mariam, sle-mariam"! They would not take food. They would not take dry coffee. They would only take cash.
Strangers, they look like Aberech. They were his relatives.
Since US AID cane to Ethippia, Gurage villages have been relieved of these suckers. I gues now they will resurrect their old occupation now since USAID is stopped. They will bother Gurage farmers again.
