Ethiopia agreed to respect Somalia’s territorial integrity. MOU canceled. Where is Horus?

Post by Educator » 11 Dec 2024, 18:16

Breaking: #Ethiopia, #Somalia commit to cooperation in historic ‘Ankara Declaration’

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed the "#Ankara_Declaration" on 11 December, 2024, during a trilateral meeting hosted by #Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.

Key to the agreement was Ethiopia’s assured access to and from the sea, which both nations acknowledged could offer “diverse benefits” while respecting Somalia’s territorial integrity. The declaration outlined plans for technical negotiations, set to begin by February 2025 and conclude within four months, to finalize arrangements that include bilateral agreements for access under Somalia’s sovereign authority.

The statement also recognized the contributions of Ethiopian soldiers to the African Union missions in Somalia. “Somalia acknowledges the sacrifices made by Ethiopian soldiers,” the declaration noted.

 Give it a few days and the man child will once again come up with a scheme that undermines the said agreement. Words or treaties don't mean anything to the renege. Now we will hear the "congratulations" news on ETV and the multiple echoing by the cadres for securing a port access with Somalia, which never has been denied to start with.

indeed, Somalia has gotten what it wanted at the end. Accepting to respect Somalia's territorial integrity cancels the MoU, and thus no need to embarras clown Abiy more by pushing him to say that he has cancelled the MoU loudly.

'Constructive talks'

According to the text of the agreement released by Turkey, the parties agreed "to leave behind differences of opinion and contentious issues, and resolutely move forward in cooperation towards common prosperity".

They agreed to work closely together on commercial arrangements and bilateral agreements that would ensure Ethiopia's "reliable, safe and sustainable access" to the sea "under the sovereign authority of the Federal Republic of Somalia".

To that end, they would start technical talks no later than the end of February which would be completed "within four months", with any differences to be dealt with "though dialogue, where necessary with Turkey's support".

Speaking alongside Erdogan, his remarks translated into Turkish, Ethiopia's Abiy said: "We have addressed the misunderstandings that have occurred over the past year.

"Ethiopia's desire for secure access to the sea is a peaceful venture and will benefit our neighbours, it is a venture that must be seen in the spirit of cooperation, not suspicion."

He said the "constructive talks" would allow the two nations "to enter the New Year in a spirit of cooperation, friendship and the willingness to work together instead of against each other".

Edu,
you are stretching the meaning of the Ankara Agreement. To begin with, at anytime, Abiy Ahmed had never stated that he does not recognize "Somalia". What Abiy did, was, sign a lease agreement of a strip of coastal land for 40 years with Somaliland. This lease agreement is not mentioned in the Ankara declaration, and it still stands unless Somaliland declares dead. Somaliland has also made many agreements with UAE, Djibouti and others.
If the Mogadishu "Somalia" misbehaves or keeps on conspiring against Ethiopia with Egypt, Eritrea and the Arabs, (which they will as the historical irredentist nature of Somalia shows) Ethiopia will tear up the paper. Despite the weakness of Abiy Ahmed, as long as Ethiopia remains strong and stable in the region, in the long run it is likely for her to get what it wants.

Since the low IQ listros had never had a country of their own, territorial integrity is beyond their scope of intellect.
