Ethiopian gov’t drafting youth by force as war in Amhara region continues

Oromia region militia forces are reportedly deployed for the forced conscription mission :

Toronto – Ethiopian government is reportedly undertaking a forced draft in cities like Addis Ababa.

According to Meseret Media, security forces were rounding up youth in the capital Addis Ababa and transporting them to military training camps.

Hundreds of youth have been taken to military camps in the past two weeks.

Targets of the forced conscriptions are daily laborers from South Ethiopia, according to the report.

The source also cited a source within the government to report that members of Oromia Militia are undertaking the draft and the militia members are given a quota as to the number of youth they have to round up and bring – apparently to the center from where they are transported to the military training camps.

In addition to Addis Ababa, the draft is underway in Sheger town. They are doing it in daylight.

About a month or so ago, the Ethiopian government declared what it called a “final operation” against Fano forces. Additional 40,000 troops were deployed according to other local news sources.

However, the government did not seem to have managed to turn around the momentum that Fano forces have been demonstrating for over a year now.

For more than three weeks now, the government has been intensifying drone attacks but the victims are mainly civilians as the strikes targeted schools and health centers. Most of the rural areas in the Amhara region are under the control of Fano Forces.

In addition to the war in the Amhara region, the government is battling against the ethnic Oromo militant group, “Oromo Liberation Army.”

Apart from the domestic security situation, tension developed in the region as Abiy Ahmed’s government relations with Eritrea and Somalia deteriorated over the issue of access to the sea. Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia have formed a “military alliance” after the leaders of the three countries met in Asmara earlier this month.

Conscription is used when a gov has lost tens of thousands of regular soldiers. You can't just drag citizens to war zones. You must have nearly depleted the regular army.
