Ethiopia on the Brink of Explosion:
Escalating Violence in Amhara Region and Fano Militias' Seizure of Parts of Gondar Threatens the Collapse of the State
Ethiopia is experiencing one of its most severe security crises in years, as violent armed clashes intensify in the Amhara region, particularly in the city of Gondar, the country’s second-largest city.
According to credible reports, Fano militias, an ethnic Amhara armed group, have launched a major offensive on the city, resulting in their control over large parts of it with little to no resistance from the government.
A Fano commander reported that the rebels already control significant portions of the city, home to an estimated 300,000 to 450,000 residents. Should Gondar fall entirely, it would mark the Ethiopian government’s largest defeat in years.
Meanwhile, other areas of the Amhara region, such as Debark and the towns of Dabat and Amba Giorgis, have seen escalating violence, including airstrikes on several locations, resulting in dozens of casualties. The government has also imposed strict communication restrictions, including mobile internet shutdowns in many areas.
Analysts suggest that the escalation of violence in Amhara could have catastrophic consequences for the future of Ethiopia as a unified state. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government faces enormous challenges in regaining control, especially with Fano militias advancing and refusing to surrender their weapons. Continued conflict may lead to further breakdowns in internal security, heightening the risk of national disintegration.
Ethiopia, already suffering from economic and environmental crises due to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and water tensions with Egypt and Sudan, now appears to be a ticking time bomb on the verge of explosion. A complete state collapse would pose a threat not only to Ethiopians but also to regional stability in the Horn of Africa, potentially prompting neighboring countries to intervene to protect their interests.
The international community must act swiftly to halt this escalating conflict before it spirals out of control and leads to disastrous consequences.
