As soon he was defeated by Ethiopia inn1978, he waged war on northern Somalia, especially persecuting the Isaaq majority clan, who in turn form the SNM as a self defence organization. An estimated 100,000(low) to 200, 000(high) were killed until 1991 in which year Somaliland declared independence. These killings by war planes and artillery shells were indescriminate. They were war crimes as well as Isaaq genocide.
