Will the six new policy instruments soon to be launched by NBE alleviate inflation?
Alas, there are two banks in Ethiopia. The one the Governor is implementing instruments upon, and the other where the UAE presiden finances his various multi billion dollar, urban gentrification projects through the overnight window at the palace. I am not sure if Ato Mamo Meheretu is privy to the amount, let alone regulate the flow of this amount of cash into the economy.

I thought I heard the PM quoting a different inflation rate in the last parliament meeting.

Doesn't really matter what they quote! It is what is felt that counts. Abiy has actually admitted that his Gentrification Projects add to the inflation but justified it with generic statement that the projects was employing people, never minding that the manufacturing initiatives that he wilfully and without reason stopped would have absorbed a large part of the unemployed, and would have done so, for years to come compared to one-time opportunities that Gentrification construction projects bring in.
So too, now that the currency swap has been declared, it is a hard indicator that the Addis Gentrification is most likely financed by UAE and the swap, a method to guaranteeing UAE that it receives what it invested on.
Worse, not only the inflation woes, but UAE seems to be imposing policy on Abiy by selecting what Ethiopia invests in!!

The other hidden cost of Addis gentrification projects is the funding diverted from agricultural and rural developments to urban centres. Compare Addis's share of the capital expenditure vs entire country's capital expenditure on agriculture and rural projects.gearhead wrote: ↑20 Jul 2024, 16:55Doesn't really matter what they quote! Abiy is continuing the madness of the old kings....
Well at least the old kings had no resources so they were stuck to Addis... but keeping the tradition is no good
Development should occur across the country... so that cities can generate more revenue and grow more...
Because ethiopias capital city since 1889 has been in addis all resources have been allocated their. But that tradition is keeping awraja centre's in poverty or in shambles.
Abiys goal is to make addis outshine the rest of the country its a pure political statement.
